Retinal issues?
I would like to ask the doctor...
Last week, I underwent laser treatment for a retinal tear.
After returning home, I sometimes feel a bright spot in the upper left area of my right eye.
When I sleep with all the lights off, I notice a dark shadow in the upper left corner, which makes me a bit anxious, so I went to see a doctor.
After dilation and examination, the doctor told me that the repair of the tear was successful and that seeing bright spots is normal.
Since the laser was applied to the lower right area, is it possible for bright lights to appear in the upper left area? After the examination, the bright spots changed to flashing lights in the evening, and I could still feel the flashes even with my eyes closed.
After the morning check-up, I also feel that since the laser treatment, my floaters have become more numerous and pronounced.
Is it normal for floaters to increase and for me to experience flashes after the laser treatment? I'm not sure if I'm overthinking this...
I hope someone knowledgeable can provide me with some insights.
I read online that an increase in floaters along with flashes could indicate retinal detachment, but I just had the laser repair done, so it seems unlikely to have a retinal detachment just a few days later.

Dr. Hu Yusheng reply Ophthalmology
Hello Mr.
Yang,
The phenomenon of flashes in your eyes after laser treatment may be due to the vitreous pulling on the retina or a normal response of the retina induced by the laser.
Distinguishing between these two requires careful evaluation.
However, after two weeks, the effect of the laser suturing should surpass the traction of the vitreous, significantly reducing the chances of the retina being affected by a tear.
Regarding the increase in floaters, you should first consider whether you had noticed a similar number of floaters before the laser treatment, as the quantity of floaters can be related to your focus, as well as the brightness and simplicity of the background colors.
If the increase in floaters truly occurred only after the laser treatment, a dilated eye examination is indeed necessary.
The most common cause is the thermal energy from the laser inducing a separation of the vitreous from the retina, although it is occasionally possible that new retinal tears or vitreous hemorrhage may have developed.
In summary, it is essential to consult an experienced ophthalmologist for a follow-up dilated examination and regular monitoring.
Sincerely,
Dr.

More Info
After undergoing laser treatment for retinal tears, it is common to experience a range of symptoms, including flashes of light and an increase in floaters. These symptoms can be concerning, especially for patients who are already anxious about their eye health. Let’s break down the phenomena you are experiencing and provide some insights based on medical knowledge.
Understanding Flashes and Floaters
1. Flashes of Light: The sensation of seeing flashes of light, particularly after laser treatment, is often attributed to the vitreous gel in the eye pulling on the retina. When the vitreous detaches or shifts, it can tug on the retina, leading to the perception of light flashes. This is known as photopsia. It is not uncommon for patients to experience these flashes, especially after procedures that involve the retina, such as laser photocoagulation.
2. Floaters: Floaters are small specks or cobweb-like shapes that drift through your field of vision. They are typically caused by tiny pieces of debris in the vitreous gel that casts shadows on the retina. After laser treatment, some patients report an increase in floaters. This could be due to the changes in the vitreous gel as it adjusts post-treatment. While floaters can be annoying, they are usually harmless unless accompanied by other symptoms such as a sudden increase in floaters, flashes of light, or a shadow in your vision, which could indicate a more serious condition.
Post-Laser Treatment Symptoms
Regarding your specific concerns:
- Increased Floaters: It is not unusual for floaters to become more noticeable after laser treatment. The procedure can cause changes in the vitreous, leading to a temporary increase in floaters. Over time, many patients find that their floaters become less bothersome as they adapt to the changes in their vision.
- Flashes of Light: The flashes you are experiencing, especially if they are intermittent and not accompanied by other alarming symptoms, are likely a normal response to the laser treatment. However, if the flashes become more frequent or are accompanied by a significant increase in floaters or changes in vision, it is essential to consult your ophthalmologist.
When to Seek Help
While it is normal to experience some visual disturbances after laser treatment, you should be vigilant for any signs that may indicate complications. If you notice:
- A sudden increase in the number of floaters
- New flashes of light that are persistent
- A shadow or curtain effect in your vision
- Any significant changes in your visual acuity
You should contact your eye doctor immediately. These could be signs of retinal detachment, which is a serious condition that requires prompt medical attention.
Conclusion
In summary, the symptoms you are experiencing—flashes of light and increased floaters—are common after laser treatment for retinal tears. They are often due to the normal physiological changes occurring in the eye as it heals. However, it is crucial to remain aware of any changes in your symptoms and to maintain regular follow-up appointments with your eye care provider. They can monitor your condition and provide reassurance or intervention if necessary. Remember, while the internet can provide information, it is always best to discuss your specific concerns with a qualified healthcare professional who can give you tailored advice based on your individual situation.
