Shoulder joint fracture
A month ago, I was riding a motorcycle when I collided with a car driver who was opening their door, resulting in a fractured rib on my right shoulder.
I have since been discharged from the hospital.
However, I have developed a large bruise on my thigh, and my left shoulder feels numb.
The doctor mentioned that the bruise would heal naturally and did not provide treatment for it, but it has not improved after a month.
I would like to know if the management of bruises falls under orthopedic treatment? Is using topical medication like Hirudoid effective for bruises? Also, why is my left shoulder feeling numb?

Fractures will always result in bleeding because bones are filled with blood vessels.
When a bone breaks, bruising occurs, and the body's blood cells will clear and transport away the bruising.
Therefore, applying local heat can help it resolve over time without the need for any topical medications.
Numbness in the shoulder may be due to superficial nerves being stretched or compressed, which usually resolves on its own, although it may take some time.

I'm sorry to hear about your accident and the injuries you've sustained. It sounds like you've been through a lot, and it's important to address your concerns regarding the bruising and numbness you're experiencing.
Firstly, let's discuss the bruising. Bruising, or contusions, occurs when small blood vessels are damaged, leading to bleeding under the skin. This can happen due to trauma, such as the impact from your motorcycle accident. The fact that you have a large bruise on your thigh and that it has not resolved after a month is concerning. While it's true that bruises typically heal on their own, the duration and persistence of your bruise may indicate a more significant injury, such as a hematoma (a localized collection of blood outside of blood vessels) or even a muscle injury.
In terms of treatment, orthopedic specialists often manage bruising, especially when it is associated with fractures or significant soft tissue injuries. The use of topical treatments like "Hirudoid" (which I assume you meant by "喜療妥") can help reduce swelling and promote healing in bruised areas. However, it's essential to follow your doctor's advice regarding any medications or topical treatments. If the bruise is not improving, it would be wise to follow up with your orthopedic doctor for further evaluation. They may want to perform imaging studies, such as an ultrasound or MRI, to assess the extent of the injury and rule out any complications.
Now, regarding the numbness in your left shoulder, this could be due to several reasons. One possibility is that the trauma from the accident may have caused some nerve irritation or compression. The brachial plexus, a network of nerves that innervates the shoulder, arm, and hand, can be affected by trauma, leading to symptoms like numbness or tingling. Additionally, if you have been compensating for the pain in your right shoulder due to the rib fracture, it could lead to muscle tension or strain in the left shoulder, resulting in numbness.
Another consideration is that the numbness could be related to referred pain from your right shoulder or rib area. Sometimes, injuries to one side of the body can cause sensations in the opposite side due to the way our nervous system processes pain and sensory information.
Given these complexities, it is crucial to communicate these symptoms to your healthcare provider. They may recommend physical therapy to help improve mobility and strength in your shoulders and upper body. Physical therapy can also address any compensatory movements that may be contributing to your symptoms.
In summary, while bruising and numbness can be common after an accident, persistent symptoms warrant further investigation. It's essential to have a thorough evaluation by your orthopedic specialist to ensure that there are no underlying issues that need to be addressed. They can provide you with a tailored treatment plan that may include physical therapy, medication, or other interventions to help you recover fully. Remember, your health and recovery are the top priority, so don't hesitate to seek further medical advice if your symptoms persist or worsen.
