Regarding Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) health care?

Hello! Both my daughter and I have weak immune systems and often catch colds.
I've heard that drinking astragalus, red date, and goji berry tea once or twice a day can boost immunity.
Is this true? If so, how should it be prepared (in terms of quantity)? Can it be consumed long-term? Is it suitable for my nine-year-old daughter as well (she has allergic rhinitis)? Thank you very much!

ERIN, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2005/04/11

Dr. Lin Qingzhong reply Traditional Chinese Medicine

Hello ERIN! I apologize for the delayed response due to a hacker intrusion into the doctor's email.

1.
Huangqi (Astragalus) and Goji Berry tea is a traditional Chinese medicine that is known for its ability to tonify Qi, nourish Yin, and improve vision.
According to research, it can enhance immunity, and you may consider using 9 to 24 grams of each herb daily.
2.
There have been no reports of side effects from the long-term use of these two herbs, and they can be taken over an extended period.
Additionally, they have a sweet taste, making them easy to consume.
3.
For allergic rhinitis, I find that a pulse diagnosis and symptom differentiation are necessary to prescribe the most effective treatment.
Simply drinking Huangqi and Goji Berry tea is not sufficient.
Best wishes.

More Info

Boosting immunity is a common concern, especially for individuals who frequently experience colds or other infections. The combination of Astragalus (Huangqi), Jujube (Red Dates), and Goji Berries (Gouqi) is often touted in traditional medicine for its potential health benefits, including immune enhancement.

Benefits of Astragalus, Jujube, and Goji Berries
1. Astragalus (Huangqi): This herb is known for its immune-boosting properties. It contains polysaccharides and flavonoids, which are believed to enhance the immune response by stimulating the production of immune cells. Some studies suggest that Astragalus may help in reducing the frequency of colds and flu, although more research is needed to confirm these effects in the general population.

2. Jujube (Red Dates): Jujube is rich in vitamins, particularly vitamin C, and antioxidants. It is traditionally used to nourish the blood and calm the mind, which can indirectly support immune function by reducing stress and promoting overall health. The high antioxidant content helps combat oxidative stress, which is beneficial for maintaining a healthy immune system.

3. Goji Berries (Gouqi): These berries are known for their high levels of antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. They are believed to enhance immune function and may also improve overall vitality. Some studies indicate that Goji berries can increase the production of white blood cells, which are crucial for fighting infections.

Preparation and Dosage
For making a tea with these ingredients, a common method is as follows:
- Ingredients:
- 10-15 grams of dried Astragalus slices
- 10-15 dried Jujube fruits
- 10-15 grams of dried Goji berries
- Preparation:
1. Rinse the ingredients under cold water.

2. Place them in a pot with about 4 cups of water.

3. Bring the water to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 30 minutes.

4. Strain the tea and enjoy it warm. You can drink this tea once or twice a day.

Long-term Use and Suitability for Children
Generally, this herbal tea can be consumed regularly, but it is advisable to consult with a healthcare provider, especially for long-term use. There are no widely reported side effects associated with these herbs when consumed in moderation. However, individual responses can vary, and it’s essential to monitor for any adverse reactions.

As for children, including a 9-year-old, this tea can be suitable, but it’s crucial to consider any specific health conditions. Since your daughter has allergic rhinitis, it would be wise to consult with a pediatrician or a qualified herbalist before introducing this tea into her diet. They can provide personalized advice based on her health history and current condition.

Conclusion
In summary, the combination of Astragalus, Jujube, and Goji Berries in tea form may offer immune-boosting benefits, particularly for those with weakened immune systems. While there is some traditional and preliminary scientific support for these claims, more rigorous studies are needed to establish definitive health benefits. Always consult with healthcare professionals before starting any new herbal regimen, especially for children or individuals with existing health conditions.
