Am I suffering from depression?

Dear Dr.
Chen, I often feel like crying for no reason.
I experience sadness, irritability, and frequent outbursts of anger, and I cannot control my emotions.
I also suffer from insomnia; even when I do fall asleep, I only sleep for about three hours before waking up.
I often feel disheartened over trivial matters and constantly perceive life as lacking joy.
I previously shared my feelings with my family, but they always thought I was overthinking.
Over time, I stopped talking to my family, husband, or friends about it.
I have visited a hospital seeking help, but I was afraid of being ridiculed, so I left.
However, my situation has worsened.
At times, I experience headaches and feel like crying, and I lose my appetite.
I sometimes lash out at myself or others.
There are moments when I contemplate death, but I don't want to burden my family.
I have previously taken medication and even attempted self-harm.
I want to understand what is happening to me.
Thank you.

Hello, what should I do? I can see your feelings of helplessness.
However, what you need to overcome right now is the shame associated with facing emotional and psychological issues.
Your fear of being ridiculed by others reflects your attitude towards handling the problem.
While you may fear the laughter of friends and family, remember that doctors will not mock their patients.
It’s important to help your loved ones understand that seeking help increases your chances of recovery, doesn’t it? They may even be a source of your pain.
Consulting a physician is a way to address your issues; online consultations cannot provide comprehensive support.
Overcoming the shame associated with mental health is crucial—seeking help is not a sign of weakness, but rather a mature step towards change.
Wishing you all the best.

It sounds like you are experiencing a very challenging and distressing time in your life, and I want to acknowledge the pain and confusion you are feeling. Based on what you’ve shared, it is possible that you are dealing with symptoms of depression, which can manifest in various ways, including persistent sadness, emotional instability, sleep disturbances, and feelings of hopelessness.
Depression is a complex mental health condition that can arise from a combination of biological, psychological, and environmental factors. The symptoms you describe—such as crying without a clear reason, irritability, difficulty sleeping, and a lack of interest in activities you once enjoyed—are common indicators of depression. Additionally, thoughts of self-harm or feeling like life is not worth living are serious symptoms that should not be taken lightly.

It's important to understand that seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness. Many people fear judgment or ridicule when discussing their mental health struggles, but mental health professionals are trained to provide a safe and confidential environment for you to express your feelings and experiences. Hospitals and clinics are required to maintain patient confidentiality, so you can feel secure in seeking help without fear of being laughed at or judged.

Given the severity of your symptoms, including thoughts of self-harm, I strongly encourage you to reach out to a mental health professional. This could be a psychiatrist, psychologist, or a licensed therapist. They can provide a thorough assessment and help you understand what you are experiencing. Treatment options may include therapy, medication, or a combination of both, depending on your individual needs.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is one effective approach that helps individuals identify and change negative thought patterns and behaviors associated with depression. Additionally, medication such as antidepressants can be beneficial for many people, as they can help balance the chemicals in the brain that affect mood.

In the meantime, there are some self-care strategies you can consider to help manage your symptoms. Engaging in regular physical activity, even if it’s just a short walk, can improve your mood. Practicing mindfulness or meditation can also help you become more aware of your thoughts and feelings without judgment. Establishing a routine, even a simple one, can provide structure to your day and help combat feelings of aimlessness.

It’s also crucial to build a support system. While you may feel hesitant to share your feelings with family or friends, finding someone you trust to talk to can be incredibly helpful. If you feel comfortable, consider joining a support group where you can connect with others who are experiencing similar challenges.

Lastly, please remember that you are not alone in this struggle. Many people face similar feelings and experiences, and with the right support and treatment, it is possible to find relief and regain a sense of joy in life. Your feelings are valid, and taking the step to seek help is a crucial part of the healing process. Please take care of yourself, and I hope you find the support you need to navigate through this difficult time.
