Can I grow to 150 cm? Although I should be considered normal, many people do not treat me as such, which troubles me greatly.
I often get teased about my height and work abilities by strangers.
When I am with my classmates, many people look at me differently and even ask why I am so short or how old I am, which makes me feel embarrassed.
During voting or when handling money, people often comment on my height.
Can I undergo surgery? I am really distressed.
A second grader from the elementary school near my house is already 141 cm tall.

Dr. Shi Guozheng reply Orthopedics
At the age of twenty, it is no longer possible for height to increase, as the growth plates in the bones have already closed, preventing any further growth.
A height of 138 centimeters can be increased through limb lengthening surgery if there are no other underlying health conditions.
However, this type of surgery carries its risks, the process can be quite arduous, and it requires a significant financial investment, as well as strong willpower.
Additionally, one must find a physician willing to perform this type of surgery.

At the age of 20, the possibility of growing taller through natural means is significantly diminished due to the closure of growth plates in the long bones. Growth plates, or epiphyseal plates, are areas of developing cartilage tissue located near the ends of long bones. In males, these plates typically close between the ages of 16 and 18, while in females, they close a bit earlier, usually around 14 to 16 years of age. Once these plates close, the bones can no longer grow in length, which means that natural height increase is no longer possible.
In your case, at 20 years old and with a height of 138 cm, it is understandable that you feel concerned about your height, especially when faced with social pressures and comparisons. While some individuals may claim that there are methods to increase height even after growth plate closure, these claims are often misleading. Supplements, exercises, or other non-surgical interventions will not lead to significant height increases once the growth plates have fused.
However, there are surgical options available for height increase, specifically limb lengthening surgery. This procedure involves surgically breaking the bones and using a device to gradually pull the bones apart, allowing new bone to form in the gap. The Ilizarov technique is one of the most well-known methods for this type of surgery. While it can result in an increase of several centimeters (up to 18 cm in some cases), it is important to note that this surgery is typically reserved for individuals with medical conditions that affect height, such as dwarfism, rather than for cosmetic purposes.
The surgery is not without risks and complications, including infection, nerve damage, and prolonged recovery times. It requires a significant commitment to physical therapy and rehabilitation, and the process can be quite painful. Additionally, the cost of such procedures can be substantial, often ranging from tens of thousands to over a hundred thousand dollars, depending on the location and the specific medical facility.
If you are considering this option, it is crucial to consult with a qualified orthopedic surgeon who specializes in limb lengthening. They can provide a thorough evaluation of your situation, discuss the potential risks and benefits, and help you make an informed decision. It is also essential to have realistic expectations about the outcomes of the surgery.
In conclusion, while natural growth is unlikely at your age, surgical options exist for those who are willing to undergo the risks and challenges associated with limb lengthening. It is vital to approach this decision with careful consideration and professional guidance. Remember that height does not define your worth or capabilities, and there are many successful individuals of all heights. Emphasizing your strengths and focusing on personal development can also help mitigate the impact of societal pressures regarding height.
