Bowel movement frequency
I visited the doctor due to a fissure, and the doctor prescribed a fiber supplement (NORMACOL) to soften my stools.
After taking it, my bowel movements changed from once every morning to twice a day, occurring around 4:00 to 5:00 AM and again in the morning upon waking up.
It seems that each time I wake up from sleep, my gastrointestinal motility is particularly pronounced, prompting a strong urge to use the restroom.
I had a colonoscopy and a digital rectal examination in mid-July, both of which showed no issues.
This change in bowel habits started after I began taking the fiber supplement (NORMACOL).
Is this situation concerning?

Dr. Chen Zhiping reply Gastroenterology and Hepatology
Hello, if your colonoscopy results are normal and the symptoms mentioned occurred only after taking the medication, you may try not taking the medication to see if the symptoms resolve.
If the symptoms reappear upon resuming the medication, it can be confirmed that the medication is the cause.
Sincerely, Dr.

When it comes to changes in bowel movements after starting a fiber supplement like NORMACOL, it is essential to understand how fiber works in the digestive system and what these changes might indicate. Fiber supplements are commonly used to improve bowel regularity and alleviate constipation. They work by adding bulk to the stool, which can help stimulate bowel movements and promote overall digestive health.
In your case, you mentioned that after starting the fiber supplement, your bowel movements increased from once a day to twice a day, occurring around 4:00 to 5:00 AM and again in the morning. This change is not uncommon and can be attributed to the effects of the fiber supplement on your gastrointestinal motility. Fiber can enhance the movement of food through the intestines, leading to more frequent bowel movements.
The fact that you are experiencing a noticeable urge to have a bowel movement upon waking, especially if it is accompanied by increased gastrointestinal activity, suggests that the fiber is effectively stimulating your digestive system. This is generally a positive sign, indicating that the supplement is working as intended. However, it is essential to ensure that you are drinking enough water while taking fiber supplements, as adequate hydration is crucial for fiber to function properly and prevent potential side effects like bloating or gas.
Regarding your concern about whether this change in bowel habits is problematic, it is important to consider a few factors. First, if your bowel movements are well-formed and not accompanied by pain, discomfort, or any other concerning symptoms, it is likely that this change is a normal response to the fiber supplement. The increase in frequency can be a sign that your body is adjusting to the additional fiber intake.
However, if you experience any adverse effects, such as diarrhea, severe abdominal pain, or any other unusual symptoms, it would be wise to consult your healthcare provider. They can assess your situation more thoroughly and determine if any adjustments to your fiber intake or overall diet are necessary.
In summary, the changes in your bowel movements after starting NORMACOL appear to be a normal response to the fiber supplement. Increased frequency of bowel movements, especially if they are well-formed and not associated with discomfort, is generally a positive outcome. Just remember to stay hydrated and monitor your body's response. If you have any concerns or experience any negative symptoms, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for further guidance.
