Growing taller

Hello, is it true that if someone has armpit hair, they will stop growing taller? Is there any basis for this claim?

Lai, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2006/09/27

Dr. Shi Guimei reply Nutrition

Hello! The growth of axillary hair can occur at any point during puberty, typically after the development of pubic hair.
If development is not yet complete and the growth plates have not closed, there is still a possibility of height increase even after the onset of axillary hair.
Many boys continue to grow taller until the age of 19, and some may even grow into their 20s.
It is advisable to consume foods rich in calcium and engage in appropriate exercise, as this can aid in your growth and development.
Sincerely, Dietitian Shih Kuei-Mei, Director of the Nutrition Department, Taoyuan Hospital, Ministry of Health and Welfare.

The belief that growing armpit hair can stop you from growing taller is a common myth, but it is not supported by scientific evidence. Hair growth, including armpit hair, is influenced by hormonal changes during puberty, but it does not directly affect height growth.
During puberty, the body undergoes various changes due to the increase in sex hormones, such as testosterone in males and estrogen in females. These hormones are responsible for the development of secondary sexual characteristics, including the growth of body hair, breast development, and changes in body composition. However, the growth plates in the long bones of the body are what determine height. These growth plates are areas of developing cartilage tissue near the ends of long bones, and they close after a certain period, which typically occurs after puberty.

Once the growth plates close, which usually happens in late adolescence to early adulthood (around ages 16-18 for females and 18-21 for males), further height increase is no longer possible. The timing of growth plate closure is primarily influenced by genetics and hormonal levels, not by the presence or absence of body hair.
In summary, while the growth of armpit hair is a sign that your body is going through puberty and hormonal changes, it does not have any direct impact on your height. If you are concerned about your growth or development, it is always a good idea to consult with a healthcare professional who can provide personalized advice based on your individual health and development.

Additionally, it’s important to understand that everyone develops at their own pace, and variations in the timing of hair growth and height increase are completely normal. If you have further questions about your development or any concerns about puberty, don’t hesitate to reach out to a doctor or a trusted adult for guidance.
