Red Spots on the Glans: Expert Insights and Concerns - Urology

Hello, doctor?

Hello Dr.
Hsu: Recently, I noticed three or four small red spots on the glans, smaller than a pinhole, which can only be seen with careful observation.
A few days ago, I visited a dermatologist at the hospital, and he mentioned that they are likely hemangiomas and not a concern.
However, today I feel some slight abnormalities, as several areas on the glans appear to have darkened in color.
I would like to ask Dr.
Hsu the following questions: 1.
Are these small red spots truly as the doctor said, not indicative of a disease? 2.
Could frequent masturbation (once a day) be a contributing factor? Thank you for your response.

A Sheng, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2006/12/12

Dr. Xu Weikai reply Urology

Ah Sheng: Hello, regarding your condition, there could be several possibilities: 1.
Hemangioma: Usually benign and does not require special treatment.
2.
Local infection, which can cause vascular proliferation and dilation.
Once the source of infection is removed, it generally recovers slowly.
3.
Chemical irritation: This can occur from using overly strong soaps or bathing in very hot water, which may lead to localized inflammation.
Reducing the use of cleaning products and using cold water to clean the glans should lead to improvement quickly.
The above are purely speculations, as I have not seen the lesions and cannot make an accurate diagnosis.
This is a response from Dr.
Hsu Wei-Kai, Director of Urology, Taitung Hospital, Department of Health, Executive Yuan.

Hello! Thank you for your inquiry regarding the small red spots on the glans. It's understandable to be concerned about any changes in your body, especially in sensitive areas. Let's address your questions and provide some insights based on medical knowledge.

1. Are the small red spots on the glans truly benign as suggested by the dermatologist?
The small red spots you describe could indeed be benign conditions such as hemangiomas (blood vessel tumors) or other vascular lesions. These are typically harmless and may not require treatment unless they cause discomfort or cosmetic concerns. However, it’s essential to consider other possibilities, such as irritation, infections, or sexually transmitted infections (STIs), especially if there are accompanying symptoms like pain, itching, or discharge. If the spots change in appearance, become painful, or if you develop new symptoms, it would be wise to seek a follow-up consultation with a healthcare provider, preferably a urologist or dermatologist specializing in genital conditions.

2. Could frequent masturbation contribute to the appearance of these red spots?
Frequent masturbation itself is generally not harmful and does not typically cause red spots on the glans. However, excessive friction or irritation from vigorous activity can lead to localized inflammation, which might manifest as redness or spots. If you notice that the spots appear or worsen after masturbation, it could be a sign of irritation. It’s important to ensure that you practice good hygiene and use adequate lubrication to minimize friction. If you feel that your habits are causing discomfort or changes in your skin, consider reducing the frequency or intensity of your activities and observe if there’s any improvement.

Additional Considerations:
- Hygiene and Care: Maintaining proper hygiene is crucial for genital health. Ensure that the area is clean and dry, and avoid using harsh soaps or products that could irritate the skin.

- Monitoring Changes: Keep an eye on the spots. If they change in size, color, or if you develop additional symptoms (such as pain, swelling, or discharge), it’s important to seek medical advice promptly.

- Sexual Health: If you are sexually active, consider discussing your sexual health with your healthcare provider. STIs can sometimes present with similar symptoms, and regular screenings are advisable for sexually active individuals.

Conclusion:
While the initial assessment by the dermatologist suggests that the red spots may not be a cause for concern, it’s essential to remain vigilant. If you experience any changes or new symptoms, don’t hesitate to seek further evaluation. Your health and peace of mind are paramount, and a healthcare professional can provide the most accurate diagnosis and treatment options tailored to your situation. Thank you for reaching out, and I hope this information helps clarify your concerns!
