Light pressure on the calf causes pain?
Hello Dr.
Huang,
I have a question to ask you regarding my calf.
When I gently tap the front of my calf with my hand, I feel pain.
Similarly, when I lightly press on the inner side of my calf—emphasizing that it is
I have tried the same method on other people, but they do not feel anything.
This condition has persisted for over a year, and I have always thought it would improve.
However, sometimes when I accidentally bump into something while walking, or if a friend unintentionally touches my calf, I feel pain.
I am unsure of the cause of this issue, and I would like to know which specialist I should see.
Thank you!

Dr. Huang Yingzhe reply Neurology
Dear Xiaohong,
This is Dr.
Huang Yingzhe from the Neurology Department of Tainan Hospital, Department of Health.
If the pain is on the inner side of the calf, it could potentially be caused by compression of the femoral nerve, tibial nerve, or lumbar nerve roots.
Please visit the neurology department, as you may need to undergo a neuromuscular examination.
Tainan Hospital cares about you and wishes you peace and well-being.

Calf pain, especially when light pressure causes discomfort, can be a perplexing issue. Your description suggests that you are experiencing heightened sensitivity or pain in your calf area, which has persisted for over a year. This condition can be attributed to several potential causes, and understanding these can help guide you toward appropriate treatment and management.
One possible explanation for your symptoms is myofascial pain syndrome. This condition arises from trigger points in the muscles, which are hyperirritable spots that can cause localized pain and discomfort. When you apply light pressure to your calf, it may activate these trigger points, leading to the pain you experience. Myofascial pain can occur due to muscle overuse, poor posture, or even stress, which can lead to muscle tension and sensitivity.
Another potential cause could be nerve irritation or entrapment. Conditions such as tarsal tunnel syndrome, where the tibial nerve is compressed as it passes through the tarsal tunnel near the ankle, can lead to pain and discomfort in the calf area. Although this typically presents with additional symptoms like tingling or numbness, it is worth considering if your pain is related to nerve involvement.
Additionally, conditions such as compartment syndrome, which occurs when pressure builds up within a muscle compartment, could lead to pain upon exertion or pressure. However, this is usually associated with more severe symptoms and is less likely given your description of the pain occurring with light touch.
Given that your symptoms have persisted for over a year, it is advisable to seek medical attention. A visit to a primary care physician or a specialist in musculoskeletal disorders, such as an orthopedic doctor or a physical therapist, would be beneficial. They can perform a thorough examination, assess your symptoms, and possibly recommend imaging studies like an MRI or ultrasound if necessary.
In the meantime, there are several self-care strategies you can implement to help manage your symptoms. Gentle stretching and strengthening exercises for the calf muscles may help alleviate some discomfort. Additionally, applying heat or cold to the area can provide temporary relief. If you notice that certain activities exacerbate your pain, it may be wise to modify those activities to prevent further irritation.
In conclusion, while the exact cause of your calf pain requires further evaluation, potential explanations include myofascial pain syndrome, nerve irritation, or other musculoskeletal issues. Seeking medical advice is crucial for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment plan. Engaging in self-care strategies and being mindful of your activities can also aid in managing your symptoms effectively.
