Height growth issues

About seven years ago, I started practicing Qigong, and every morning I would do it.
I noticed a peculiar phenomenon: during my annual health check-ups, I discovered that I had grown taller by one centimeter over the years.
I didn't think much of it, assuming it might be due to measurement error.
However, recent statistics show that I have grown a total of 3.4 centimeters.
Doctor, could there be any issues with my condition? As far as I remember, once the growth plates fuse, one shouldn't grow taller anymore, right? So why am I still growing taller in my 40s?

kiwi, 50~59 year old female. Ask Date: 2007/02/25

Hello: In response to your question, it is not impossible to grow taller after the growth plates have fused, but the likelihood is low, and the potential increase in height is minimal (only a few centimeters).
The exact reasons for this are not clearly understood, but it is most likely due to multiple factors.
Qi Gong may be one of the contributing factors.
It is particularly important to monitor for any other changes besides height, such as thickening of the hands or feet, rough skin, increased sensitivity to heat, or weight gain.
If any of these symptoms occur, it may be advisable to consult a metabolic specialist to rule out other hormonal influences.
Wishing you all the best!

The question of whether adults can still grow taller after their growth plates have closed is a complex one, rooted in the understanding of human growth and development. Typically, growth plates, also known as epiphyseal plates, are areas of cartilage located at the ends of long bones. These plates are responsible for the lengthening of bones during childhood and adolescence. In general, growth plates close after puberty, which means that the potential for further height increase is significantly diminished.

In males, growth plates usually close around the ages of 18 to 21, while in females, this process tends to occur a bit earlier, around ages 16 to 18. Once these plates have fused, the bones can no longer grow in length, and thus, an increase in height is not expected. However, there are some nuances to consider.

Firstly, the perception of height can fluctuate due to various factors, such as posture, spinal alignment, and even hydration levels. For example, when you wake up in the morning, you might feel taller because the intervertebral discs in your spine are rehydrated and expanded after lying down overnight. This temporary increase in height can be misleading if one is measuring height at different times of the day.

In your case, you mentioned experiencing a height increase of 3.4 cm in your 40s, which is quite unusual. While it is unlikely that this increase is due to actual bone growth, there are several possible explanations:
1. Measurement Variability: Height measurements can vary based on the time of day, the method of measurement, and even the equipment used. It's possible that the differences you observed could be attributed to these factors rather than actual growth.

2. Postural Improvements: Engaging in practices such as Qigong or yoga can lead to better posture and spinal alignment, which may give the appearance of increased height. Strengthening the core and back muscles can also help maintain a more upright posture, contributing to a taller appearance.

3. Spinal Compression and Decompression: Throughout the day, the spine can compress due to gravity, leading to a slight decrease in height. Conversely, activities that promote spinal decompression, such as stretching or hanging exercises, can temporarily restore some of that height.

4. Health Factors: Certain health conditions, such as osteoporosis, can lead to a loss of height due to vertebral compression fractures. Conversely, if you have improved your overall health and fitness, it may have positively impacted your posture and spinal health.

5. Measurement Errors: If you have not been consistently measured under the same conditions, discrepancies could arise from human error or differences in technique.

In conclusion, while it is highly unlikely that you have experienced actual bone growth after the closure of your growth plates, the factors mentioned above could explain the height changes you have observed. If you have concerns about your height or any related health issues, it may be beneficial to consult with a healthcare professional who can provide personalized advice based on your medical history and current health status. Remember, maintaining good posture and overall health is key to maximizing your height potential, regardless of age.
