Increase in height?

I would like to ask the doctor if I can still grow taller at my age.
I used to take traditional Chinese medicine (bone growth medicine) but it didn't seem to work, and I'm currently only 150 cm tall.
I heard from my instructor that her daughter grew taller after seeing you for treatment with a certain medication.
I'm wondering if I still have a chance to grow taller?

Xiao Ban, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2007/08/11

Dr. Hou Jiawei reply Rare Disease

Taking traditional Chinese medicine (bone growth medicine) does not directly stimulate height increase.
It is recommended to first assess the bones and growth plates.
If there is still space in the growth plates, specific medications may be used to assist growth after a detailed and careful evaluation by a specialist.
Although growth hormone is considered safe, it is still an expensive medication, and its use must take economic benefits into account.
For instance, growth hormone can be used for short-term treatment in adolescents who are not growth hormone deficient, either before or during puberty, in conjunction with LHRH analogs (commonly known as menopause injections) to promote additional height growth.

The question of whether one can still grow taller after a certain age is a common concern, especially among adolescents and young adults. Generally, height growth is primarily determined by the growth plates, or epiphyseal plates, located at the ends of long bones. These plates are made of cartilage and are responsible for bone lengthening during childhood and adolescence. Once these growth plates close, which typically occurs after puberty, further height increase is unlikely.

In most individuals, growth plates close between the ages of 16 and 18 for females and 18 to 21 for males. After this closure, the bones become solid and no longer have the capacity to grow in length. Therefore, if you are already past this age range, it is highly unlikely that you will experience any significant increase in height.
However, there are rare medical conditions that can lead to continued growth even after the typical growth plate closure. For instance, individuals with certain hormonal imbalances, such as excess growth hormone (as seen in acromegaly), may experience abnormal growth patterns. In these cases, the growth plates may not close as expected, leading to increased height. Nevertheless, such conditions are quite rare and usually accompanied by other health issues.

Regarding your experience with traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and herbal remedies, it is essential to approach these treatments with caution. While some individuals report positive outcomes, scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of such remedies for height increase is limited. The effectiveness of any treatment can vary significantly from person to person, and what works for one individual may not work for another.
If you are concerned about your height and are seeking ways to maximize your growth potential, consider the following recommendations:
1. Nutrition: A balanced diet rich in essential nutrients is crucial for overall health and development. Focus on consuming adequate amounts of calcium, vitamin D, protein, and other vitamins and minerals that support bone health. Foods like dairy products, leafy greens, lean meats, and nuts can contribute to a nutritious diet.

2. Exercise: Regular physical activity can promote healthy growth and development. Engaging in activities that involve stretching and jumping, such as basketball, swimming, or yoga, can be beneficial. Exercise also helps improve posture, which can make you appear taller.

3. Sleep: Adequate sleep is vital for growth and overall health. During sleep, the body releases growth hormone, which plays a role in growth and development. Aim for 8-10 hours of quality sleep each night.

4. Posture: Maintaining good posture can help you maximize your height potential. Slouching can make you appear shorter than you are, while standing tall can enhance your overall appearance.

5. Consult a Healthcare Professional: If you have concerns about your growth or suspect any underlying health issues, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional. An endocrinologist can evaluate your growth plates through X-rays and assess your hormonal levels to determine if there are any medical interventions available.

In conclusion, while the likelihood of growing taller after a certain age is minimal, focusing on a healthy lifestyle can help you reach your maximum potential. If you are still in your growth years, there may be some opportunities for height increase, but it is essential to have realistic expectations and understand the biological limitations.
