Growing taller

I graduated from junior high school at a height of 165 cm, and now in my second year of high school, I am 166 cm.
Am I not growing enough? I feel like I started to develop a habit of masturbation unknowingly since the second year of junior high, but I only do it once a day and never more than that.
Will this affect my height? Since starting high school, I have tried to reduce it.
In sixth grade, I was 160 cm tall, which was just right.
My friends who entered junior high with me were about the same height, but now they are all over 180 cm.
Are there any methods to remedy this? My sleep pattern used to be irregular, but now I make sure to sleep before 10 PM.
Previously, I would go to bed around 11 PM to midnight, and I am gradually improving.
Should I eat certain foods? My family situation is not very good, so the food I eat is quite simple.
My dad is 171 cm tall, and my mom is 156 cm tall.
I want to reach at least 180 cm, or at least 175 cm.
Please give me some answers.
Thank you.
I also don't know if my growth plates have fused or how to check that.

Hello, Wei-Jie: The factors determining height are quite complex, but they generally relate to genetic inheritance, nutrition, sleep, and exercise.
Typically, boys experience their fastest growth during adolescence between the ages of 14 and 18, while girls do so between 12 and 16.
Parental height is certainly one of the factors, but there are also instances of traits being inherited from grandparents.
Additionally, sufficient sleep can stimulate the secretion of growth hormone (which is most active between 10 PM and 4 AM), thereby promoting height increase.
Regular exercise can also stimulate growth.
During adolescence, consuming calcium-rich foods (such as milk and dairy products) can strengthen bones and provide the necessary nutrients for bone growth.
It is advisable for you to visit an orthopedic clinic to assess whether your growth plates still have room for growth and to check if your growth hormone levels are normal.
This will give you a better idea of whether you will continue to grow taller.
Thank you.

More Info

Growing taller is a concern for many adolescents, and it’s understandable to seek answers about height growth, especially when comparing oneself to peers. At 16 years old and standing at 166 cm, you may feel anxious about your height, particularly if friends around you are significantly taller. Let's delve into the factors influencing height growth and what you can do to maximize your potential.

Understanding Height Growth
Height is primarily determined by genetics, which means that the heights of your parents can give you an idea of your potential adult height. However, environmental factors such as nutrition, physical activity, and sleep also play crucial roles in growth. The growth plates in your bones, known as epiphyseal plates, are responsible for bone lengthening. These plates remain open during childhood and adolescence, allowing for growth. Typically, they begin to close after puberty, which can vary between individuals but generally occurs in the late teens to early twenties.

Factors Influencing Growth
1. Genetics: As mentioned, your genetic background is a significant determinant of your height. With a father at 171 cm and a mother at 156 cm, your potential height may be influenced by these genetic factors.

2. Nutrition: A balanced diet rich in essential nutrients is vital for growth. Key nutrients include:
- Proteins: Important for growth and development. Sources include lean meats, dairy, legumes, and nuts.

- Calcium: Crucial for bone health. Found in dairy products, leafy greens, and fortified foods.

- Vitamins: Vitamin D is particularly important for calcium absorption and bone growth. Sunlight exposure and foods like fatty fish can help.

3. Physical Activity: Regular exercise, particularly activities that promote stretching and strength, can stimulate growth hormone production. Sports like basketball, swimming, and even exercises like hanging from a bar can be beneficial.

4. Sleep: Growth hormone is primarily released during sleep, particularly in deep sleep. Ensuring you get adequate, quality sleep is essential. Aim for 8-10 hours per night, especially during your growth years.

5. Hormonal Factors: Hormones play a significant role in growth. If there are any hormonal imbalances, they could affect your growth potential. If you have concerns, consulting a healthcare provider for a check-up could be beneficial.

Addressing Your Concerns
Regarding your specific concerns about masturbation, research indicates that it does not affect growth or height. Engaging in this activity in moderation is generally considered normal and should not impact your physical development.

Since you mentioned that you have improved your sleep habits by going to bed earlier, this is a positive step. Consistency in sleep patterns will help your body recover and grow more effectively.

What Can You Do?
1. Nutrition: Focus on improving your diet as much as possible within your means. Incorporate more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and protein sources. If you can, consider discussing your dietary needs with a healthcare provider or a nutritionist.

2. Exercise: Continue engaging in physical activities that you enjoy. Consistency is key, so find sports or exercises that you can stick with.

3. Sleep Hygiene: Maintain your improved sleep schedule. Create a calming bedtime routine to enhance sleep quality.

4. Consult a Professional: If you are concerned about your growth plates and whether they have closed, consider visiting a healthcare professional. They can perform an X-ray to assess your growth plates and provide personalized advice based on your growth potential.

Conclusion
While it may feel discouraging to see friends grow taller, remember that growth patterns vary significantly among individuals. At 16, you still have some potential for growth, especially if your growth plates have not yet closed. Focus on maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and be patient with your body. Height is just one aspect of who you are, and confidence and self-acceptance are equally important.
