Subtotal hysterectomy
I underwent a hysterectomy (with preservation of the ovaries and cervix) at the beginning of this year, and it has been over a month since the surgery.
On March 6, after using the restroom, I noticed a small amount of dark brown discharge.
Is this normal? Considering the timing, it should coincide with my menstrual cycle, so is this expected? It has been over three days now.
Please help clarify this for me.

Dr. Chen Changfu reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
It is possible that the dark brown discharge is just a small amount of secretion from the tissue healing at the surgical site.
It may also be menstrual blood resulting from residual endometrial tissue left after a subtotal hysterectomy.
If you are experiencing any unusual symptoms after the surgery, it is advisable to consult the surgeon who performed the procedure for a thorough examination and a definitive diagnosis.

More Info
After undergoing a hysterectomy, especially when the ovaries and cervix are preserved, it is not uncommon to experience various types of vaginal discharge, including brown discharge. This brown discharge can be a result of several factors related to the surgical procedure and the body's healing process.
Firstly, brown discharge often indicates old blood that has taken longer to exit the body. After a hysterectomy, the body goes through significant changes, including hormonal fluctuations and healing of the surgical site. If the discharge is light and not accompanied by other concerning symptoms such as a strong odor, itching, or significant pain, it is generally considered normal.
In the context of your situation, since you mentioned that the discharge appeared around the time you would typically expect your menstrual cycle, it could be your body’s way of adjusting to the absence of the uterus. Even though the ovaries are still intact, the hormonal balance may be disrupted temporarily, leading to irregularities in discharge patterns.
It's important to monitor the discharge for any changes. If the discharge becomes heavier, changes color to a bright red, or is accompanied by any unusual symptoms such as fever, severe pain, or foul odor, it would be advisable to consult your healthcare provider. These could be signs of infection or other complications that may require medical attention.
Additionally, after a hysterectomy, some women may experience what is known as "post-operative discharge," which can include a mix of blood, mucus, and tissue as the body heals. This can last for several weeks, and the color can vary from red to brown as the healing progresses.
In summary, brown discharge after a hysterectomy can be normal, especially if it is light and not accompanied by other symptoms. However, it is essential to stay vigilant and consult with your healthcare provider if you have any concerns or if the discharge changes in nature. Regular follow-ups with your doctor are crucial to ensure that your recovery is progressing well and to address any questions or symptoms you may have during your healing process.
