Is Garcinia Cambogia Safe? Concerns About Weight Loss Supplements - Pharmacology

Garcinia Cambogia weight loss supplement

Hello, I bought a weight loss product that contains Garcinia Cambogia extract (with HCA, minerals, and potassium) and patented formulas like chromium niacinate.
After taking it, my heart rate increased, and I couldn't sleep at night, which was very distressing.
I also experienced dizziness and headaches.
Could you tell me if there are any additional ingredients in it? Moreover, it is labeled as a health drink, which means it should be classified as a food product, but the box does not have the health department inspection certification label.
Does this mean it is non-compliant? Thank you for your help.

Due to the lack of detailed information regarding the issues you mentioned, I can only provide explanations based on some of the components you brought up.

1.
Garcinia Cambogia extract comes from the fruit of the Garcinia Cambogia plant, with the active ingredient being Hydroxycitric Acid (HCA), also known as citric acid, containing 10%-30% of this compound.
Its physiological effects include: (1) reducing fat production, (2) decreasing energy absorption in the body, and (3) promoting fat oxidation.
2.
Chromium Picolinate (Chromium Mate) has several effects: (1) it promotes glucose metabolism, (2) assists insulin in regulating blood sugar levels, (3) reduces insulin requirements and improves glucose tolerance in some diabetic patients, (4) aids in improving blood circulation, and (5) helps eliminate fat and increase lean muscle mass.
3.
(1) Vitamin B3, also known as Niacin, plays a coenzyme role in various metabolic processes in the body, with its most important function being participation in carbohydrate metabolism.
A deficiency in Niacin can lead to symptoms such as a white coating on the tongue, a red and painful tongue, gastrointestinal discomfort, and diarrhea.
(2) Niacin not only reduces bad cholesterol (LDL) but also increases good cholesterol (HDL).
It lowers cholesterol levels and improves blood circulation, and it is effective in the treatment of schizophrenia and other mental disorders.
(3) Vitamin B3 is essential for promoting blood circulation and skin health.
It also assists in the functioning of the nervous system, metabolism of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins, and the production of hydrochloric acid necessary for the digestive system.
(4) Deficiency symptoms include: early signs such as restlessness, muscle weakness, general fatigue, poor appetite, headaches, a swollen red tongue, skin damage (including redness, rashes, dryness, roughness, and wrinkles), nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, and dermatitis.
Late-stage symptoms can include dementia and death.
(5) Symptoms of overdose include flushing, nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, weakness, headaches, confusion, sweating, hyperglycemia, hyperuricemia, arrhythmia, and jaundice.
(6) Benefits include: 1.
Promoting digestive health and alleviating gastrointestinal disorders, 2.
Improving skin health, 3.
Preventing and alleviating severe migraines, 4.
Promoting blood circulation and lowering blood pressure, 5.
Reducing diarrhea, 6.
Alleviating discomfort from Meniere's disease, 7.
Ensuring the body efficiently utilizes food to produce energy, 8.
Treating inflammation of the mouth and lips, preventing bad breath, 9.
Reducing cholesterol and triglycerides, 10.
Dilating blood vessels, 11.
Treating dizziness and tinnitus, 12.
Treating leprosy.
(7) Interactions with other substances: Cigarettes can reduce vitamin absorption, and smokers may need to supplement Niacin.
Alcohol can lower blood pressure to a minimum; caution is advised.
Regarding the qualified inspection labels from the Department of Health, if there is no indication of potential use, it is advisable to be cautious.
Generally, if there is a qualified inspection, it will have a specific number from the Department of Health.
Please check the website of the Food Inspection Bureau of the Department of Health.
Thank you, and I wish you health and happiness.
Goodbye.

More Info

Garcinia Cambogia, particularly its active ingredient hydroxycitric acid (HCA), has gained popularity as a weight loss supplement. However, its safety and efficacy remain subjects of debate within the medical community. While some studies suggest that Garcinia Cambogia may aid in weight loss by suppressing appetite and inhibiting fat production, the results are often inconsistent and not robust enough to warrant its widespread use as a reliable weight loss solution.

Your experience of increased heart rate, insomnia, dizziness, and headaches after consuming a product containing Garcinia Cambogia raises several concerns. These symptoms could be indicative of a reaction to the supplement itself or to other ingredients that may be included in the formulation. Many weight loss supplements contain stimulants, such as caffeine or other herbal extracts, which can lead to increased heart rate and anxiety. Additionally, the lack of a health department certification label on the product raises red flags regarding its safety and quality control. In the United States, dietary supplements are not as strictly regulated as pharmaceuticals, which means that manufacturers are not required to prove their products' safety or efficacy before marketing them. This can lead to variations in ingredient quality and potential contamination with harmful substances.

If you are experiencing adverse effects, it is crucial to stop taking the supplement immediately and consult with a healthcare professional. They can help assess your symptoms, review the ingredients of the product, and determine if further medical evaluation is necessary. It is also essential to discuss any other medications or supplements you may be taking, as interactions could exacerbate side effects.

In terms of weight loss, a more sustainable and healthier approach involves a balanced diet and regular physical activity. While supplements may offer some benefits, they should not replace healthy lifestyle choices. A diet rich in whole foods, including fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains, combined with regular exercise, is the most effective way to achieve and maintain a healthy weight.

Additionally, if you are considering using weight loss supplements, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare provider or a registered dietitian. They can provide personalized recommendations based on your health status and weight loss goals. They can also help you navigate the often confusing landscape of dietary supplements and ensure that you are making safe and informed choices.

In summary, while Garcinia Cambogia may have some potential benefits for weight loss, its safety is not guaranteed, especially in the absence of proper regulation and quality control. Your symptoms are concerning and warrant immediate attention from a healthcare professional. Prioritizing a balanced diet and regular exercise is the most effective and safest way to achieve weight loss and improve overall health.
