Individuals with well-developed sweat glands in their hands, feet, and armpits?

In the past year, I have been sweating a lot, especially in the last two months.
My hands, feet, and armpits are almost constantly sweaty, even in an air-conditioned room! I used to sweat, but that was only in hot situations or when I was very nervous.
Recently, I also noticed that I have body odor in my armpits, which makes it difficult for me to interact with others in class and makes me very upset.
This, in turn, makes me even more nervous and causes me to sweat even more! How can I stop sweating under my arms all the time? I want to return to being like a child! I try to avoid spicy foods and don't drink cold beverages, but nothing seems to improve! Recently, due to excessive anxiety, I have been experiencing rapid heartbeats and nausea at night, making it hard for me to sleep because I fear that people will find out about my body odor and ignore me! So, I feel anxious every day! Please, teach me what to eat or what to avoid so that my body won't be so extreme.

Hello! Can increased sweating be caused by emotional stress? Relaxing, engaging in moderate exercise, and maintaining a balanced diet are essential for daily health.
If someone has overactive sweat glands in their hands, feet, or underarms, they may consider consulting a neurologist for evaluation.
Thank you! Dietitian Huang Shuli, Hsinchu Hospital.

Excessive sweating, known medically as hyperhidrosis, can be a challenging condition that affects both physical comfort and emotional well-being. It seems you are experiencing significant sweating in your hands, feet, and underarms, even in cool environments, which can be distressing. Additionally, the presence of body odor, particularly axillary (underarm) odor, can further exacerbate feelings of anxiety and social discomfort.

Understanding Hyperhidrosis and Body Odor
Hyperhidrosis can be classified into two types: primary and secondary. Primary hyperhidrosis typically occurs without an underlying medical condition and often affects specific areas such as the palms, soles, and underarms. Secondary hyperhidrosis, on the other hand, is caused by an underlying health issue, such as hormonal changes, medications, or other medical conditions. It’s important to consult with a healthcare professional to determine the type of hyperhidrosis you are experiencing and to rule out any underlying conditions.

Body odor, or bromhidrosis, is often a result of sweat interacting with bacteria on the skin. When sweat is broken down by bacteria, it can produce an unpleasant odor. Factors such as diet, hygiene, and genetics can influence body odor.

Tips for Managing Excessive Sweating and Body Odor
1. Consult a Healthcare Professional: Since your symptoms have changed and intensified, it’s crucial to seek medical advice. A healthcare provider can help determine if there’s an underlying cause for your excessive sweating and body odor. They may recommend treatments such as prescription antiperspirants, medications, or even procedures like Botox injections, which can temporarily block the nerves that cause sweating.

2. Use Antiperspirants: Over-the-counter antiperspirants containing aluminum chloride can be effective in reducing sweating. Apply them at night before bed for the best results. If these are not effective, your doctor may prescribe a stronger formulation.

3. Maintain Good Hygiene: Regular bathing with antibacterial soap can help reduce the bacteria on your skin, which can minimize body odor. Make sure to dry thoroughly, especially in areas prone to sweating.

4. Wear Breathable Fabrics: Choose loose-fitting, breathable clothing made from natural fibers like cotton, which can help wick moisture away from the skin. Avoid synthetic fabrics that can trap heat and moisture.

5. Dietary Considerations: Certain foods can exacerbate sweating and body odor. Spicy foods, caffeine, and alcohol can increase sweating. Consider reducing these in your diet to see if it helps alleviate your symptoms.

6. Stress Management: Since you mentioned that anxiety exacerbates your sweating, incorporating stress-reduction techniques such as mindfulness, meditation, or yoga can be beneficial. These practices can help you manage anxiety and reduce the physical symptoms associated with it.

7. Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of water can help regulate your body temperature and may reduce the amount you sweat. Staying cool can also help minimize sweating.

8. Consider Professional Treatments: If lifestyle changes and over-the-counter products do not provide relief, treatments such as iontophoresis (a procedure that uses electrical currents to reduce sweating), prescription medications, or even surgical options may be considered.

Conclusion
Managing excessive sweating and body odor can be a multifaceted approach that includes lifestyle changes, medical treatments, and stress management techniques. It’s essential to consult with a healthcare professional to explore the best options tailored to your specific situation. Remember, you are not alone in this, and there are effective strategies available to help you regain confidence and comfort in your daily life.
