Erectile Issues and Sexual Performance at 55 - Urology

Concerns about sexual function?

1.
I am 55 years old this year.
My sexual frequency is about once every 1-2 weeks.
It has been normal in the past.
However, in the last 2-3 months, I have been experiencing issues where my erection goes soft as soon as I change positions.
Worse yet, there have been a few occasions where it has gone soft while still inside during thrusting (my partner has been very cooperative during the process, and we even watch adult films for stimulation).
What problem am I experiencing? Do I need to seek medical attention? Should I see a urologist?
2.
I believe I can last longer, but I had a girlfriend before with whom I would finish in about 3 minutes each time (while with others, I last around 20 minutes).
In my personal judgment, it seems like her vaginal folds are particularly pronounced (it feels like there are more folds than with others).
Is this assumption correct? If I want to ensure her satisfaction as well, how should I adjust? Thank you!

We recommend that you first consult a urologist for further evaluation and testing.

Understanding erectile issues and sexual performance at the age of 55 can be a complex topic, as it involves both physiological and psychological factors. Let's break down your concerns and provide some insights.

1. Erectile Dysfunction (ED) Symptoms: The symptoms you describe—losing erection during position changes or while thrusting—are common indicators of erectile dysfunction. At 55, it is not unusual for men to experience changes in erectile function due to a variety of factors, including hormonal changes, blood flow issues, psychological stress, or underlying health conditions such as diabetes or cardiovascular disease. It’s essential to recognize that this is a medical issue and not a reflection of your masculinity or desirability.

If these symptoms have persisted for 2-3 months, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional, specifically a urologist. They can conduct a thorough evaluation, which may include a physical examination, blood tests to check hormone levels, and assessments for cardiovascular health. Early intervention can help manage the condition effectively and improve your sexual health.

2. Performance and Duration: Regarding your experience with different partners, it’s important to note that sexual performance can vary significantly from one partner to another. Factors such as arousal levels, emotional connection, and even anatomical differences can influence how long a man can maintain an erection. The perception that a partner's anatomy (like the tightness or texture of the vaginal walls) affects performance is valid; however, it is also essential to consider psychological factors. Anxiety about performance can lead to premature ejaculation or difficulty maintaining an erection.

To enhance satisfaction for both you and your partner, consider the following strategies:
- Communication: Openly discuss sexual preferences and desires with your partner. Understanding each other's needs can reduce anxiety and enhance intimacy.

- Foreplay: Spend more time on foreplay to increase arousal for both partners. This can help build excitement and reduce performance pressure.

- Pacing: Experiment with different rhythms and techniques during intercourse. Slowing down can help you maintain control and prolong the experience.

- Kegel Exercises: Strengthening pelvic floor muscles through Kegel exercises can improve erectile function and control over ejaculation.

- Consultation with a Specialist: If premature ejaculation is a concern, a healthcare provider can offer specific treatments, including behavioral techniques, medications, or counseling.

3. Psychological Factors: Stress, anxiety, and depression can significantly impact sexual performance. If you find that psychological factors are affecting your sexual experiences, consider speaking with a mental health professional who specializes in sexual health. Therapy can help address any underlying issues and improve your overall sexual confidence.

4. Lifestyle Changes: Maintaining a healthy lifestyle can also play a crucial role in sexual health. Regular exercise, a balanced diet, adequate sleep, and avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol can improve blood flow and overall well-being, which are essential for healthy erectile function.

In summary, experiencing erectile issues at 55 is not uncommon, and addressing it through medical consultation, open communication with your partner, and lifestyle adjustments can lead to improvements. Don't hesitate to seek professional help, as early intervention can make a significant difference in your sexual health and quality of life.
