Gastric ulcer
I have a gastric ulcer and recently found out about it after undergoing a transnasal gastroscopy.
However, I enjoy drinking beverages like winter melon milk.
Can I consume such milk combined with other drinks? If not, could you explain the reason? Also, are there other milk beverages mixed with lemon or similar ingredients that I can drink? Thank you for your response, doctor.

In general, foods that are sour, sweet, or spicy, as well as analgesics, are not recommended for consumption.
Milk is acceptable, although some individuals may experience diarrhea.

When it comes to managing a condition like stomach ulcers, dietary choices can play a significant role in both symptom management and overall healing. Stomach ulcers, or peptic ulcers, are sores that develop on the lining of the stomach or the upper part of the small intestine, often caused by an infection with Helicobacter pylori or the long-term use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
In your case, you are asking about the consumption of winter melon milk and lemon water. Generally, the dietary recommendations for individuals with stomach ulcers emphasize avoiding foods and beverages that can irritate the stomach lining. This includes acidic foods, spicy foods, and certain beverages like coffee and alcohol.
Winter Melon Milk: Winter melon is known for its cooling properties and is often considered gentle on the stomach. However, when combined with milk, it’s essential to consider how your body reacts to dairy products. While milk can provide a soothing effect temporarily, it may also stimulate the stomach to produce more acid, which could potentially exacerbate ulcer symptoms in some individuals. If you find that consuming winter melon milk does not lead to discomfort, it may be acceptable in moderation. However, if you experience any symptoms like bloating, pain, or discomfort after consuming it, it would be wise to avoid it.
Lemon Water: Lemons are highly acidic, and while they have health benefits, they can be irritating to the stomach lining, especially for someone with an ulcer. The acidity in lemon juice can increase gastric acid production, which might worsen ulcer symptoms. Therefore, it is generally advisable to avoid lemon water if you have a stomach ulcer.
General Dietary Recommendations:
1. Avoid Irritants: Stay away from spicy foods, acidic foods (like citrus), caffeine, and alcohol. These can aggravate your condition.
2. Choose Soothing Foods: Opt for bland, non-irritating foods such as bananas, oatmeal, and low-fat dairy products. These can help coat the stomach and reduce irritation.
3. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water, but be cautious with beverages that may irritate your stomach.
4. Small, Frequent Meals: Eating smaller meals more frequently can help manage stomach acid levels and reduce discomfort.
5. Monitor Your Body’s Response: Everyone’s body reacts differently to various foods. Keep a food diary to track what you eat and how it affects your symptoms.
In conclusion, while winter melon milk may be tolerable for some, lemon water is typically not recommended for those with stomach ulcers due to its acidity. It’s crucial to listen to your body and consult with a healthcare provider or a registered dietitian for personalized dietary advice tailored to your specific condition. They can help you create a balanced diet plan that supports healing while minimizing discomfort.
