Will Compesolon affect blood test results?
Hello: Since mid-July 2010, I have been experiencing skin itching, which has subsequently led to recurrent dermatitis, severe itching (which has affected my normal sleep and daily routine), rashes, and lichenification.
Initially, I sought treatment from a dermatologist, and by early August, the condition had become systemic.
The dermatologist prescribed Compesolon 5mg, to be taken six times a day, but the rashes became raised and developed purulent-like lesions.
I was then referred to a rheumatologist, who suspected that it might be caused by a Type IV immune response.
Consequently, the use of Compesolon was discontinued, and blood tests for cytokines were conducted.
I was switched to Prednisolone and Trexan.
However, during my follow-up visit, the blood test results came back normal.
I later realized that I had been taking Compesolon for a month prior to the blood draw and had also taken two tablets on the day of the test.
I am unsure if this could have caused any discrepancies in the blood test results.

Dr. Liao Lingmei reply Pharmacology
Dear: The active ingredient of Compesolon is Prednisolone.
The pharmacological action of Prednisolone is related to cytokines, and it does not interfere with the interactions affecting cytokine experimental values.
However, for inquiries regarding potential errors in blood test results, please consult a laboratory medicine expert.
Wishing you all the best! Stay healthy and happy!

Compesolon, which contains the active ingredient prednisolone, is a corticosteroid medication commonly used to reduce inflammation and suppress the immune system. It is important to understand how this medication can potentially affect blood test results, particularly in the context of your situation involving skin issues and subsequent blood tests.
Corticosteroids like prednisolone can influence various laboratory tests, but the extent of their impact depends on the specific tests being conducted. For instance, prednisolone can alter the levels of certain cytokines, which are proteins involved in cell signaling in the immune system. However, as noted in your inquiry, the specific blood test for cytokines may not be significantly affected by the medication itself, as the interaction between prednisolone and cytokine levels is complex and can vary based on individual responses and the timing of the medication relative to the blood draw.
In your case, you mentioned that you had been taking Compesolon for a month and had taken two doses on the day of your blood test. While it is possible that the medication could influence the results, it is essential to consider that the primary purpose of the blood test and the specific parameters being measured will dictate the degree of potential interference. For example, corticosteroids can affect white blood cell counts, glucose levels, and liver function tests, among others. If the blood test was designed to assess inflammation or immune response, the results could be skewed due to the immunosuppressive effects of prednisolone.
Moreover, when interpreting blood test results, it is crucial to consider the clinical context. If your blood tests returned normal results despite the use of Compesolon, it may indicate that the medication did not significantly alter the parameters being measured or that your condition had improved sufficiently to reflect normal values. However, if there were specific markers that you were concerned about, it would be prudent to discuss these with your healthcare provider, who can offer insights based on the specific tests performed and your overall clinical picture.
In conclusion, while Compesolon (prednisolone) can potentially affect certain blood test results, the degree of impact varies based on the type of test and individual patient factors. It is advisable to communicate openly with your healthcare provider regarding any medications you are taking and how they may influence your test results. They can provide tailored advice and may recommend retesting if there are concerns about the accuracy of previous results. Always ensure that your healthcare team is aware of all medications and supplements you are taking to facilitate accurate interpretation of your laboratory findings.
