Can people with iritis take propolis?

Hello, Doctor.
I have iritis, but it has not been flaring up recently.
However, I am currently experiencing severe nasal allergies.
I heard that propolis can help improve nasal allergies, but the seller mentioned that it is not suitable for individuals with autoimmune issues such as lupus.
I was checked years ago at Taipei Veterans General Hospital and I do not have lupus, but I understand that iritis is also an autoimmune issue, so I am hesitant to purchase propolis.
I would like to ask for your opinion.
Thank you.

Dr. Hu Yusheng reply Ophthalmology

Propolis is classified as a "health supplement," and there is sufficient evidence from clinical studies to support its efficacy.
It is recommended to seek conventional medical treatment.
Wishing you health and safety, Ophthalmologist - Hu Yu-Sheng.

When considering the use of propolis for allergies in individuals with iritis, it's essential to understand both the nature of iritis and the properties of propolis. Iritis, an inflammation of the iris, can be associated with autoimmune conditions, and while it may not be directly linked to systemic autoimmune diseases like lupus, it does indicate a potential sensitivity of the immune system.

Propolis is a resinous substance produced by bees, known for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties. It has been used in traditional medicine for various ailments, including allergies. However, its effects on individuals with autoimmune conditions can be complex.

1. Autoimmune Considerations: While you do not have lupus, the fact that you have a history of iritis suggests that your immune system may react differently than that of a healthy individual. Propolis can stimulate the immune system, which may not be advisable for someone with an autoimmune condition, as it could potentially exacerbate inflammation or trigger an immune response that could lead to a flare-up of iritis.

2. Allergic Reactions: Propolis can cause allergic reactions in some individuals, particularly those who are allergic to bee products. Symptoms can range from mild (skin rashes) to severe (anaphylaxis). Given your current issues with nasal allergies, introducing a new supplement like propolis could complicate your situation if you are sensitive to it.

3. Consultation with Healthcare Providers: It is crucial to consult with your healthcare provider before starting any new supplement, especially if you have a history of autoimmune issues. They can provide personalized advice based on your medical history and current health status. An allergist or an immunologist may also offer insights into whether propolis is a safe option for you.

4. Alternative Treatments: If you are looking for relief from nasal allergies, there are various other treatments available that may be safer for someone with your medical history. Antihistamines, nasal corticosteroids, and saline nasal sprays are commonly used to manage allergic symptoms and may be more appropriate for your situation.

5. Monitoring Symptoms: If you decide to try propolis or any new treatment, closely monitor your symptoms. If you notice any worsening of your iritis or new allergic reactions, discontinue use immediately and consult your healthcare provider.

In summary, while propolis has potential benefits for allergies, its use in individuals with autoimmune conditions like iritis should be approached with caution. Consulting with your healthcare provider is essential to ensure that any treatment you consider is safe and appropriate for your specific health needs.
