Heating lemon juice with milk?
Hello, doctor.
I heard that drinking lemon juice makes it less likely to gain weight when eating.
I usually drink a cup of pure lemon juice (just water and no sugar) in the morning, but I love milk.
I saw you mentioned that they can be consumed together, but I can only drink it hot, not cold.
Can I microwave them together after mixing? Thank you very much!

Dear Coco,
Hello! The idea that drinking lemon juice before eating can help prevent weight gain is a misconception.
The key factors in avoiding obesity are related to caloric intake and caloric expenditure.
Cold lemon juice can be mixed with milk and then microwaved for consumption, but it is important to avoid high temperatures to prevent the degradation of vitamin C in the lemon juice and the denaturation of proteins in the milk, which can cause curdling.
Wishing you health and happiness!
Sincerely,

More Info
When it comes to combining lemon juice with milk, there are several factors to consider, especially regarding nutrition and the effects on digestion. First and foremost, it is essential to understand that lemon juice is acidic, while milk is alkaline. When mixed together, the acid in lemon juice can cause the proteins in milk to curdle, leading to a separation of the liquid into curds and whey. This reaction is similar to what happens when making cheese, as you mentioned in your previous questions.
If you are considering heating lemon juice with milk, it is crucial to note that heating can exacerbate the curdling process. When milk is heated, the proteins become more susceptible to denaturation, which means they can lose their natural structure and function. This denaturation can lead to a less palatable texture and may also result in a loss of some nutritional value, particularly if the milk is heated to a high temperature for an extended period.
In terms of nutrition, both lemon juice and milk offer unique health benefits. Lemon juice is rich in vitamin C, which is essential for immune function, skin health, and antioxidant protection. On the other hand, milk is an excellent source of calcium, protein, and various vitamins, including vitamin D and B vitamins. However, when you combine the two, the nutritional benefits may be compromised due to the curdling effect. If you choose to heat the mixture, it is advisable to do so gently and at a lower temperature to minimize the risk of curdling.
If your goal is to enjoy the benefits of both lemon juice and milk without compromising the texture and nutritional value, consider consuming them separately. For instance, you could drink lemon water in the morning and enjoy warm milk later in the day. This approach allows you to reap the benefits of both without the risk of curdling.
Regarding your question about whether drinking lemon juice can help with weight management, there is some evidence to suggest that lemon juice may aid in digestion and promote a feeling of fullness, which could potentially help with weight control. However, it is essential to remember that no single food or drink can guarantee weight loss. A balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle are crucial for effective weight management.
In summary, while you can technically heat lemon juice with milk, it is not recommended due to the potential for curdling and the loss of nutritional value. If you prefer warm beverages, consider enjoying them separately to maximize their health benefits. Always listen to your body and consult with a healthcare professional or a registered dietitian if you have specific dietary concerns or health conditions.
