Acidic constitution
Doctor: I have read some information online about acidic and alkaline body types and it seems that I have an acidic body type because I exhibit some of the characteristics.
I rarely eat meat, seafood, white rice, dairy products, eggs, beef, ham, etc.
Why have I developed an acidic body type? What should I do? Is it enough to only eat alkaline foods? However, some foods are considered good ingredients; can I not eat them often? For example, fish, duck, and chicken—aren't they healthier and lower in calories? Also, can I drink yogurt and milk regularly, or should I consult a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner to adjust my body type?

Dear Camilla,
Hello! Currently, you should pay attention to maintaining a balanced diet.
A diverse and balanced intake of various foods is the key to good health, rather than focusing excessively on the acidity or alkalinity of each food item.
Foods can generally be categorized into six major groups, each with its own functions.
The recommended daily intake for each food group is as follows:
- Dairy (such as milk, yogurt) 1.5 to 2 servings (each serving is about 240 cc)
- Grains approximately 3 bowls of rice (whole grains are a good option)
- Meat, fish, eggs, and legumes about 4 servings (each serving is approximately 1 ounce)
- Vegetables about 3 to 5 plates
- Fruits about 2 to 4 servings (each serving is roughly the size of a baseball)
- Fats about 2 tablespoons.
If you are interested in Traditional Chinese Medicine, that is also an option.
Wishing you good health!
Sincerely,
Dietitian Shih Kuei-Mei

More Info
Understanding the concept of an "acidic body" and its relation to diet is a topic that has gained popularity in recent years. Many people believe that an acidic body can lead to various health issues, including osteoporosis and kidney stones. However, it is essential to clarify that the body has sophisticated mechanisms to maintain its pH balance, primarily through the kidneys and lungs. The normal blood pH is tightly regulated between 7.35 and 7.45, and deviations from this range can lead to serious health problems.
Why You Might Feel Acidic
Your dietary habits, such as consuming less meat, seafood, and dairy, can influence your body's acid-base balance. Foods that are high in protein, like meat and dairy, can produce acid when metabolized. Conversely, fruits and vegetables tend to have an alkalizing effect. However, the notion of being an "acidic body" is often oversimplified. The body’s pH is influenced by various factors, including metabolic processes, hydration levels, and overall diet.
Dietary Recommendations
1. Balanced Diet: Instead of focusing solely on alkaline foods, aim for a balanced diet that includes a variety of food groups. This includes whole grains, lean proteins, healthy fats, fruits, and vegetables. Each food group plays a crucial role in your overall health.
2. Alkaline Foods: Incorporate more fruits and vegetables into your diet. Leafy greens, avocados, bananas, and berries are excellent choices. These foods not only help maintain a healthy pH but also provide essential vitamins and minerals.
3. Moderation in Protein: While protein is vital for health, excessive intake can lead to increased acid production. Lean meats, poultry, and fish can be part of a healthy diet, but moderation is key. Aim for a balanced intake that meets your nutritional needs without overloading on protein.
4. Dairy Products: Yogurt and milk can be beneficial due to their calcium content, which is essential for bone health. If you are lactose intolerant or prefer not to consume dairy, consider fortified plant-based alternatives that provide similar nutrients.
5. Hydration: Staying well-hydrated is crucial for kidney function and helps maintain pH balance. Drinking plenty of water can assist in flushing out excess acids from the body.
Specific Foods and Their Impact
- Fish, Duck, and Chicken: These are generally considered healthy protein sources. They can be included in moderation as part of a balanced diet. The key is to avoid excessive consumption of any single food group.
- Fermented Foods: Foods like yogurt and kefir are beneficial for gut health and can aid in digestion. They can be consumed regularly unless you have specific dietary restrictions.
Seeking Professional Guidance
If you are concerned about your body’s acidity or overall health, consulting a healthcare professional or a registered dietitian can provide personalized advice. They can help assess your dietary habits, recommend appropriate changes, and address any underlying health issues.
Conclusion
In summary, while the concept of an "acidic body" can be concerning, it is essential to focus on a balanced diet that includes a variety of foods. Incorporating more fruits and vegetables, moderating protein intake, staying hydrated, and including fermented foods can help maintain a healthy pH balance. If you have specific health concerns or dietary restrictions, seeking professional guidance is always a wise choice. Remember, health is a holistic concept that encompasses not just diet but also lifestyle factors such as exercise, sleep, and stress management.
