Chinese herbal medicine for height increase?
Hello, I am 18 years old and 173 cm tall.
I would like to grow to around 181 cm.
I've heard from some of my taller classmates that their parents gave them traditional Chinese medicine when they were younger to help them grow taller.
Could you please tell me what prescriptions might help with height growth? Also, what is the approximate age range during which one can still grow taller?

Dr. Zhuang Yihui reply Traditional Chinese Medicine
Human height is closely related to family genetics, nutrition, and exercise.
Male skeletal growth typically continues until around the age of 17; once the growth plates have fused, further height increase is not possible.
While exercise will not increase height after the bones have stopped growing, it can strengthen the skeletal muscles.
For concerns regarding growth plates, it is advisable to consult an orthopedic physician.
There are many traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formulas that can assist with height increase and growth development.
These formulas primarily work by strengthening the spleen and enhancing qi, nourishing the kidneys and marrow, and fortifying the tendons and bones.
Examples of such TCM formulas include Liuwei Dihuang Wan, Shenling Baizhu San, and Shiquan Dabu Tang.
However, TCM emphasizes the importance of individualized diagnosis and treatment based on one's constitution, so if you seek assistance from herbal medicine, it is best to consult a licensed TCM practitioner.
Additionally, there is a recipe available online (as follows) that may be beneficial for individuals who experience cold hands and feet in winter, along with lower back pain and fatigue.
Height-Enhancing Recipe – Red Duck Stew for Growth
Ingredients: One red duck, a set of height-enhancing herbal ingredients (including Shiquan Dabu Tang herbs, along with Guixiao, Duzhong, and Junniuqi).
Preparation: Take one red duck, removing the excess fat and neck.
Cut the duck into four pieces.
Combine one-quarter of the duck with the prepared herbal ingredients from a Chinese medicine shop, add water, and simmer until the duck is tender.
It is best to consume this dish on the same day it is prepared.
Effects: Promotes development and improves complexion.
It is particularly beneficial for girls aged 13 to 16 and boys aged 13 to 18, with a recommendation to consume it three to four times a week to aid in growth.

When it comes to height growth, especially during the late teenage years, it's important to understand the biological factors that influence growth and the effectiveness of herbal remedies. At 18 years old, you are nearing the end of your natural growth period, as most individuals experience their final growth spurts during puberty, which typically concludes by the age of 18 to 20 for males.
Genetics plays a significant role in determining your height, and while nutrition and overall health can influence growth, the potential for significant height increase diminishes as you approach adulthood. The growth plates in your bones, known as epiphyseal plates, close after puberty, which means that once they are fused, further height increase is unlikely.
Regarding herbal remedies, there are various traditional Chinese medicines and other herbal supplements that are claimed to promote growth. Some commonly mentioned herbs include:
1. Ginseng: Often used for its overall health benefits, ginseng is believed to enhance energy and vitality, which may indirectly support growth during the growth phase.
2. Astragalus: This herb is thought to boost the immune system and improve overall health, which could be beneficial during the growth period.
3. Goji Berries: Rich in vitamins and antioxidants, goji berries are often touted for their health benefits, including potential effects on growth.
4. Cordyceps: This fungus is believed to enhance energy and stamina, which may support physical activity and overall health.
However, it's crucial to note that there is limited scientific evidence supporting the effectiveness of these herbs specifically for height increase. Most studies focus on their general health benefits rather than their impact on growth. Additionally, the use of herbal remedies should be approached with caution, as they can interact with other medications and may not be suitable for everyone.
If you are considering herbal remedies, it's advisable to consult with a healthcare professional or a qualified herbalist. They can provide guidance based on your individual health needs and ensure that any supplements you take do not interfere with your overall health or any existing medical conditions.
In terms of lifestyle factors that can support your growth potential, consider the following:
1. Nutrition: A balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals, particularly calcium and vitamin D, is essential for bone health. Foods like dairy products, leafy greens, nuts, and fish can contribute to your nutritional needs.
2. Exercise: Regular physical activity, especially weight-bearing exercises and stretching, can promote healthy bone development and overall fitness.
3. Sleep: Adequate sleep is crucial for growth, as growth hormone is primarily released during deep sleep. Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night.
4. Posture: Maintaining good posture can help you appear taller and support spinal health.
In conclusion, while herbal remedies may offer some health benefits, their effectiveness in significantly increasing height is not well-supported by scientific evidence. At 18 years old, your growth potential is limited, and focusing on a healthy lifestyle may be the best approach to maximize your height. If you have concerns about your growth or overall health, consider discussing them with a healthcare provider who can offer personalized advice and support.
