Pelvic fracture with limb length discrepancy?
Hello, I had surgery for a comminuted fracture of my left knee with the placement of steel nails and plates on September 30.
A month later, I discovered that I also have a pelvic fracture, and since then, I have noticed that the crack has widened.
I have gradually realized that my legs are of different lengths (the left leg is longer).
Is this normal? My left leg also cannot be lifted backward, which prevents me from standing straight.
I would like to know if resting at home will help.

Hello: Limb length discrepancy may be caused by pelvic fracture displacement.
It is necessary to assess the degree of displacement to determine if surgical correction is required.
If the displacement of the pelvic fracture is minimal, conservative treatment may be sufficient.
Thank you!

Pelvic fractures and subsequent leg length discrepancies can be complex issues, particularly following traumatic injuries such as those sustained in a car accident. In your case, it appears that you have experienced a significant injury to your left knee, which was treated with internal fixation using plates and screws. Additionally, the discovery of a pelvic fracture after the initial surgery adds another layer of complexity to your recovery process.
Firstly, it is important to understand that pelvic fractures can lead to various complications, including changes in leg length. This discrepancy can occur due to several factors, including the nature of the fracture, the healing process, and the surgical intervention itself. When a pelvic fracture occurs, it can affect the alignment of the pelvis and the lower extremities. If the fracture heals in a misaligned position, it can result in one leg appearing longer or shorter than the other. This is particularly concerning if the fracture is not adequately stabilized during the healing process.
In your case, the observation that your left leg appears longer than your right could be attributed to the pelvic fracture and its healing dynamics. It is also possible that muscle imbalances or compensatory mechanisms due to pain and limited mobility are contributing to this perception. For instance, if you are unable to fully extend or move your left leg due to pain or stiffness, it may lead to an altered gait pattern, which can further exacerbate the feeling of leg length discrepancy.
Regarding your inability to extend your left leg backward and stand straight, this is not uncommon following significant knee injuries and pelvic fractures. The muscles surrounding the knee and hip may become tight or weak due to disuse, pain, or protective mechanisms following the injury. This can lead to limitations in range of motion and functional mobility. Rehabilitation is crucial in addressing these issues, and it typically involves physical therapy focused on restoring strength, flexibility, and range of motion.
While resting at home is essential for recovery, it is equally important to engage in appropriate rehabilitation exercises as soon as it is safe to do so. Physical therapy can help you regain strength and mobility in your left leg, which may alleviate some of the discrepancies you are experiencing. A physical therapist can design a tailored rehabilitation program that considers your specific injuries and recovery goals.
In terms of your concern about whether resting at home will be sufficient for recovery, it is important to strike a balance between rest and activity. Prolonged inactivity can lead to muscle atrophy and stiffness, which can hinder your recovery. Gentle, guided movements and exercises, as recommended by your healthcare provider, can promote healing and prevent complications such as joint stiffness and muscle weakness.
If you continue to experience significant leg length discrepancies or functional limitations, it may be necessary to consult with an orthopedic specialist. They can assess your healing progress through imaging studies and physical examination, and determine if further intervention is required.
In summary, while some degree of leg length discrepancy and mobility limitations can occur following pelvic and knee injuries, proactive rehabilitation and monitoring by healthcare professionals are key to optimizing recovery. Engaging in physical therapy, maintaining a balance between rest and activity, and seeking further evaluation if issues persist will be essential steps in your recovery journey.
