Itching in the urethra without abnormal discharge?

The symptoms have been present for about 3 to 4 days.
There is occasional itching in the urethra, and the itching increases in frequency when I feel the urge to urinate.
I have looked through some historical issues here and online resources, and I haven't noticed any abnormal discharge, but my urine is yellow.
I personally drink very little water, which is usually the case.
I'm not sure if this is urethritis.
Would taking anti-inflammatory medication help? It’s a bit complicated to seek medical care while I'm abroad.
Thank you.

Yue Shuyah, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/02/21

Dr. Xu Wencang reply Urology

Urine tests and cultures can be performed, and treatment can be administered with medication.

More Info

Urethral itching without abnormal discharge can be a concerning symptom, and it’s understandable that you’re seeking clarity on the possible causes and solutions. Based on your description, it seems that you have been experiencing this itching sensation for about 3 to 4 days, accompanied by a yellowish urine color, but without any unusual discharge.

Possible Causes
1. Dehydration: One of the most common causes of concentrated urine, which can appear yellow, is dehydration. When you do not drink enough fluids, your urine becomes more concentrated, which can irritate the urethra and lead to itching. Increasing your water intake can help dilute your urine and may alleviate the itching.

2. Urinary Tract Infection (UTI): While you mentioned the absence of abnormal discharge, a UTI can still occur without typical symptoms such as cloudy or foul-smelling urine. The itching you are experiencing could be a sign of irritation in the urinary tract, which is often accompanied by a burning sensation during urination.
3. Irritation or Allergic Reaction: Sometimes, personal care products such as soaps, lotions, or laundry detergents can cause irritation to the urethra. If you have recently changed any products or have been exposed to new substances, this could be a contributing factor.

4. Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs): Certain STIs can cause urethral itching without significant discharge. While you may not have noticed any unusual discharge, it’s important to consider this possibility, especially if you have had new or multiple sexual partners.

5. Skin Conditions: Conditions like eczema or psoriasis can also affect the genital area, leading to itching.

Recommended Solutions
1. Increase Fluid Intake: Start by drinking more water to help dilute your urine. Aim for at least 8-10 glasses a day, or more if you are active or in a hot climate.

2. Avoid Irritants: Refrain from using scented soaps, lotions, or other products in the genital area. Opt for mild, unscented products to reduce irritation.

3. Practice Good Hygiene: Ensure that you maintain good hygiene, but avoid over-washing the area, which can lead to irritation.
4. Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of your symptoms. If the itching persists or worsens, or if you develop additional symptoms such as burning during urination, frequent urination, or fever, it would be advisable to seek medical attention.

5. Consider Over-the-Counter Remedies: If you suspect a UTI, some over-the-counter products may help alleviate symptoms temporarily, but they do not replace the need for medical evaluation and treatment.

6. Consult a Healthcare Provider: Since you are currently abroad and may find it challenging to seek immediate medical care, consider telehealth options. Many healthcare providers offer virtual consultations, which can be a convenient way to discuss your symptoms and receive advice tailored to your situation.

Conclusion
While it is possible that your symptoms are due to dehydration or irritation, it is essential to remain vigilant. If your symptoms do not improve with increased hydration and avoidance of irritants, or if they worsen, it is crucial to seek medical advice. A healthcare provider can perform necessary tests to rule out infections or other underlying conditions. Remember, your health is paramount, and addressing these symptoms sooner rather than later can help prevent complications.
