Issues with Internal Hemorrhoid Ligation
Hello, I would like to ask about my condition.
I had a hemorrhoid ligation on February 22 (Monday), and today, February 25 (Thursday), I still feel some swelling and have a sensation of difficulty passing gas.
Sometimes, after passing gas, I notice a slight amount of red blood.
Is this normal? Aside from these issues, everything else seems to be fine, and I have not consumed excessive refined foods in my diet.
Additionally, are there any dietary considerations I should be aware of? Thank you.

Dr. Cai Xingzhi reply Surgery
It is possible to have conditions such as anal fissures, hemorrhoids, and diseases around the rectum.
You can consult a gastroenterologist or a colorectal surgeon nearby.
Dietary restrictions for rectal bleeding include avoiding spicy foods and alcohol.
Additionally, it is advisable to minimize late nights and prolonged sitting, while increasing the intake of vegetables and drinking plenty of water.

After undergoing hemorrhoid ligation, it is not uncommon to experience various post-surgical symptoms, including a feeling of fullness or pressure in the rectal area, difficulty passing gas, and minor bleeding. These symptoms can be attributed to the surgical procedure itself, which involves the ligation (tying off) of the hemorrhoidal tissue to cut off its blood supply, leading to its eventual shrinkage and resolution.
1. Feeling of Fullness and Difficulty Passing Gas: The sensation of fullness or pressure is often due to swelling and inflammation in the area where the ligation was performed. This can create a temporary obstruction or discomfort that may make it feel like gas is trapped. It is essential to allow your body time to heal, as these sensations should gradually diminish over the days following the procedure.
2. Minor Bleeding: Experiencing a small amount of bright red blood after passing gas or during bowel movements can be normal in the initial days following hemorrhoid ligation. This bleeding is usually due to irritation or minor trauma to the surrounding tissues. However, if the bleeding is persistent, increases in volume, or is accompanied by severe pain, it is crucial to contact your healthcare provider for further evaluation.
3. Dietary Considerations: Post-surgery, it is vital to maintain a diet that promotes soft and regular bowel movements to avoid straining, which can exacerbate discomfort and lead to complications. Focus on a high-fiber diet that includes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and plenty of fluids. This will help soften stools and facilitate easier passage. Avoiding overly processed foods and excessive dairy can also be beneficial, as these can contribute to constipation.
4. Activity and Care: After hemorrhoid ligation, it is advisable to avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activities for a few days to allow the area to heal properly. Gentle walking can promote circulation and aid in recovery. Additionally, practicing good hygiene and keeping the area clean can help prevent infection and promote healing.
5. When to Seek Help: If you experience severe pain, significant bleeding, signs of infection (such as fever or increased redness and swelling), or if your symptoms do not improve within a week, it is essential to reach out to your healthcare provider. They can assess your condition and determine if any further intervention is necessary.
In summary, while some discomfort and minor bleeding can be expected after hemorrhoid ligation, it is crucial to monitor your symptoms and maintain a diet that supports healing. If you have any concerns or if your symptoms worsen, do not hesitate to consult your doctor for personalized advice and care.
