Growth plate issues
I would like to ask about the hanging bricks (used for height increase) that I purchased online.
I followed the instructions, and sometimes I measure an increase of one or two centimeters in height, but at times it returns to my original height.
Will this have any impact on my bones, or could it cause any long-term effects?

Hello, after the growth plates close, the bones should no longer grow in length, but height can still vary slightly (for example, being taller in the morning).
I'm not familiar with the term "吊磚" (which translates to "hanging bricks"), so I cannot comment on whether it would have any impact.
Thank you.

When it comes to height enhancement products, such as the "吊磚" (hanging bricks) you mentioned, it's essential to understand how they interact with the body's growth mechanisms, particularly the growth plates. Growth plates, or epiphyseal plates, are areas of developing cartilage tissue located near the ends of long bones. They are responsible for the lengthening of bones during childhood and adolescence. Once these plates close, which typically occurs around the ages of 16 to 18 for females and 18 to 21 for males, further height increase is unlikely.
From your description, it seems that you have experienced slight fluctuations in your height when using the product. This is not uncommon, as various factors can cause temporary changes in height, such as posture, time of day, and hydration levels. For instance, individuals are generally taller in the morning after lying down all night, as the spine decompresses. However, these changes are typically minor and do not indicate actual growth.
Regarding the use of height enhancement products, there are several considerations:
1. Effect on Growth Plates: If your growth plates are already closed, using such products will not stimulate further growth. If they are still open, excessive or improper use of these products could potentially lead to injuries or stress on the bones, but it is unlikely to cause significant harm if used correctly and in moderation.
2. Potential Risks: While the product may not directly harm your bones, improper use could lead to muscle strain or joint issues. It's crucial to follow the instructions carefully and not overexert yourself. Additionally, if you experience any pain or discomfort while using the product, it is advisable to stop and consult a healthcare professional.
3. Nutritional Support: To support healthy bone growth, it is essential to maintain a balanced diet rich in calcium, vitamin D, and protein. These nutrients are vital for bone health and development. Engaging in regular physical activity, particularly weight-bearing exercises, can also promote bone strength.
4. Consulting Professionals: If you have concerns about your height or the effects of using such products, it is always best to consult with a healthcare provider, preferably an orthopedic specialist. They can assess your growth plates through imaging studies and provide personalized advice based on your individual circumstances.
5. Realistic Expectations: It's important to have realistic expectations regarding height enhancement. Genetics play a significant role in determining height, and while nutrition and exercise can influence growth during developmental years, they cannot override genetic predispositions.
In summary, while using height enhancement products like "吊磚" may lead to temporary changes in height measurement, they are unlikely to cause lasting effects on your bones if used correctly. However, if your growth plates are closed, further height increase is improbable. Always prioritize safety and consult with a healthcare professional for personalized advice and guidance.
