The growth plate?

Could you please tell me if it is effective to use medication to delay the closure of growth plates when they are close to healing? I would like to grow an additional 5 centimeters.
Currently, I am 165 cm tall, 16 years and 6 months old, and my parents have an average height of 158 cm.
I have sparse armpit and leg hair.

Tongxue, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/03/14

Dr. Shi Guozheng reply Orthopedics

If there is no effective treatment, the only way to lengthen the calves or thighs is through surgery; however, there are many potential complications.
Additionally, having longer legs with shorter upper limbs can result in a disproportionate appearance, which may not be aesthetically pleasing.

At the age of 16, the potential for height increase is largely determined by the status of your growth plates, which are areas of developing cartilage tissue located at the ends of long bones. These growth plates are responsible for the lengthening of bones during childhood and adolescence. Once they close, which typically occurs after puberty, further height increase becomes highly unlikely.

From your description, it seems that your growth plates are nearing closure. This is a critical factor because once they fuse, no further natural growth in height can occur. The average age for growth plate closure varies, but it generally happens between 16 and 18 years for males, and can be earlier for females. Given that you are already 16 years and 6 months old, the window for natural height increase is narrowing.

Regarding the use of medications to delay growth plate closure, such as growth hormone therapy or other hormonal treatments, these options are typically reserved for specific medical conditions diagnosed by a healthcare professional. They are not generally recommended for individuals who are otherwise healthy and simply wish to increase their height. The effectiveness of such treatments can vary, and they may come with potential side effects and risks.

In your case, considering your current height of 165 cm and the average height of your parents (158 cm), it is important to recognize that genetics play a significant role in determining your final adult height. While it is understandable to desire to grow taller, especially in a society that often emphasizes height, it is crucial to approach this desire with realistic expectations.

If you are considering any form of treatment, it is essential to consult with a qualified healthcare provider or an endocrinologist who specializes in growth disorders. They can evaluate your growth plates through X-rays and assess your overall health to determine if any interventions are appropriate for you. They can also provide guidance on the potential benefits and risks associated with any treatment options.

In addition to medical interventions, there are lifestyle factors that can support healthy growth while your growth plates are still open. These include:
1. Nutrition: A balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals, particularly calcium and vitamin D, is essential for bone health. Foods like dairy products, leafy greens, nuts, and fish can contribute to your nutritional needs.

2. Exercise: Regular physical activity, especially weight-bearing exercises, can promote bone health and overall well-being. Activities like swimming, cycling, and even stretching can be beneficial.

3. Sleep: Adequate sleep is crucial for growth and development. Aim for 8-10 hours of quality sleep each night, as growth hormone is primarily released during deep sleep.

4. Posture: Maintaining good posture can help you appear taller and can also prevent back problems in the future.

5. Avoiding Growth Inhibitors: Avoiding smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and other substances that can negatively impact growth and health is important.

In conclusion, while the desire to increase height at 16 is understandable, it is essential to approach this goal with realistic expectations and a focus on overall health. Consulting with a healthcare professional will provide you with the best guidance tailored to your individual situation. Remember, your worth is not defined by your height, and embracing your unique qualities is equally important.
