How to determine your bone age and the healing of growth plates?
Dear Doctor, I have a question regarding my situation.
I am currently a sophomore in college and my height is only around 160 cm, which I am not very satisfied with.
I have visited various hospitals' endocrinology departments to inquire about obtaining growth hormone at my own expense.
Is it effective for increasing height? There are many opinions on the market regarding height enhancement products.
Essentially, whether growth hormone is effective for increasing height depends on individual factors such as growth plates and other considerations.
I would appreciate your clarification on this matter.

Dr. Su Yiren reply Orthopedics
Hello JCR; at your current sophomore level, it is too late to use Growth Hormone (GH).
It is more effective to use it between the ages of fourteen and eighteen, when the growth plates have not yet fully closed.
In adults, the use of GH can lead to muscle hypertrophy (as seen in bodybuilders) and hypertension-related complications, but once discontinued, muscle mass will atrophy.
I hope this answer clarifies your doubts, and feel free to reach out if you have any questions.

When it comes to height increase in adults, particularly those whose growth plates have already closed, the consensus in the medical community is that significant height increase is not possible. Growth plates, or epiphyseal plates, are areas of developing cartilage tissue located at the ends of long bones. These plates are responsible for the lengthening of bones during childhood and adolescence. Once an individual reaches adulthood, typically around the ages of 18 to 25, these growth plates fuse and become solid bone, effectively halting any further increase in height.
In your case, at the age of 20 and with a height of 160 cm, it is unlikely that you will grow taller naturally. The closure of growth plates means that the bones can no longer elongate, as they lose the ability to undergo the process of endochondral ossification, which is essential for growth in height. This is a biological process that is largely influenced by genetics, nutrition, and hormonal factors during the growth years.
Regarding the use of growth hormone (GH) therapy, it is important to note that this treatment is typically effective only in children and adolescents who have not yet reached their growth potential. In adults, especially those with closed growth plates, the efficacy of growth hormone therapy for height increase is minimal and often not recommended. Furthermore, the use of growth hormones can come with significant side effects and health risks, including joint pain, insulin resistance, and increased risk of certain cancers.
As for the various products marketed for height increase, many of these claims lack scientific backing. The effectiveness of such products can be dubious, and they often do not address the underlying biological limitations imposed by closed growth plates. It is crucial to approach these options with skepticism and to consult with a healthcare professional before considering any treatments.
In terms of height reduction with aging, this phenomenon is primarily due to factors such as spinal disc degeneration, osteoporosis, and compression fractures. As people age, the intervertebral discs lose hydration and elasticity, leading to a decrease in disc height and, consequently, overall height. Additionally, the vertebrae can become weaker and more susceptible to fractures, further contributing to height loss.
If you are still concerned about your height, it may be beneficial to focus on aspects of your health and well-being that you can control, such as maintaining a healthy diet, engaging in regular exercise, and practicing good posture. While you may not be able to increase your height significantly, these factors can enhance your overall appearance and confidence.
In summary, while the desire to increase height is understandable, especially in a society that often emphasizes height, the biological limitations imposed by closed growth plates make it unlikely for adults to grow taller. Consulting with a healthcare provider can provide you with personalized advice and help you understand your options better.
