Gout and Soy Milk
Hello, Doctor Gao.
I would like to ask if it is okay for me to drink a cup of unsweetened soy milk (about 250cc) for breakfast every day, considering my fasting blood test showed a uric acid level of 7.7 (with the upper limit of the normal range being 7.6).
Thank you.

Dr. Gao Jiankai reply Internal Medicine
Hello, thank you for your question.
Currently, high-purine foods from vegetables, including legumes or related products and mushrooms, do not have an impact on individuals with gout or hyperuricemia! If you have never had a history of joint pain, the effect of high-purine vegetable foods is even less significant, so there is no need to worry.
As for patients who are diagnosed with gout (hyperuricemia accompanied by joint swelling and pain), in principle, these foods should not have an effect.
However, some patients clinically report that drinking soy milk seems to exacerbate joint pain, so it may be advisable to avoid it during flare-ups, but generally, it is considered safe.
This message is from the Allergy, Immunology, and Rheumatology Department of Changhua Hospital, Ministry of Health and Welfare.
We care about you.

When it comes to managing high uric acid levels, dietary choices play a crucial role. Your question about consuming unsweetened soy milk daily is pertinent, especially considering your uric acid level of 7.7 mg/dL, which is slightly above the normal range.
First, let's discuss soy milk. Unsweetened soy milk is a plant-based alternative to cow's milk and is generally low in purines, which are compounds that can elevate uric acid levels when metabolized. Purines are found in various foods, particularly in red meats, organ meats, certain seafood, and some alcoholic beverages. Therefore, incorporating unsweetened soy milk into your diet can be a good choice, as it does not contribute significantly to purine intake.
In addition to being low in purines, unsweetened soy milk is also a good source of protein and contains beneficial nutrients such as calcium, vitamin D, and isoflavones, which have antioxidant properties. These nutrients can support overall health and may even have a positive effect on inflammation, which is beneficial for individuals with high uric acid levels.
However, moderation is key. While consuming a cup (approximately 250cc) of unsweetened soy milk daily is generally considered safe and can be beneficial, it's essential to ensure that your overall diet is balanced. This means incorporating a variety of foods that are low in purines, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat dairy products, while avoiding high-purine foods.
It's also important to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, as hydration helps to dilute uric acid levels in the blood and promotes its excretion through urine. Aim for at least 8-10 glasses of water a day, especially if you are consuming protein-rich foods.
In terms of potential concerns, some individuals may experience digestive issues when consuming soy products, particularly if they have a soy allergy or intolerance. If you notice any adverse reactions after consuming soy milk, it would be wise to consult with a healthcare professional.
Lastly, while dietary changes can significantly impact uric acid levels, they should be part of a comprehensive approach that includes regular physical activity, maintaining a healthy weight, and possibly medication if prescribed by your doctor. Regular monitoring of your uric acid levels is also essential to ensure that they remain within a healthy range.
In summary, drinking unsweetened soy milk daily can be a healthy choice for someone with slightly elevated uric acid levels, provided it is part of a balanced diet and accompanied by adequate hydration. Always consult with your healthcare provider for personalized advice tailored to your specific health needs.
