Is it normal to continue growing taller?

Hello, doctor.
I have been wondering why, at the age of 26, I still grow an average of about 0.3 cm.
Is this normal? Although my family members are all tall (over 175 cm), I am the only one who continues to grow.
I have mild mitral valve prolapse and am concerned that if I keep growing, my heart may not be able to handle it.
I have started growing again in the last three years; after graduating from high school, I maintained a height of 175 cm, and now I am 176.4 cm.
Is this normal?

Dr. Liao Yaopan reply Family Medicine

Hello, being tall should not pose significant issues with heart load.
As for whether you will continue to grow taller, you may consult an endocrinologist at Changhua Hospital for further evaluation.

At 26 years old, experiencing a slight increase in height, such as an average of 0.3 cm, can be a source of curiosity and concern, especially considering your family background of taller individuals. While it is generally accepted that most males reach their maximum height by their late teens to early twenties, there are exceptions, and some individuals may continue to grow slightly into their mid-twenties.
The growth plates, or epiphyseal plates, are areas of developing cartilage tissue near the ends of long bones. These plates typically close after puberty, which means that significant height increases become unlikely after this point. For males, growth plates usually close around the ages of 16 to 18, but some may remain open a bit longer, allowing for minor height increases. Factors such as genetics, nutrition, and overall health can influence this process.

In your case, the fact that you have experienced a height increase after the age of 25 is unusual but not entirely impossible. It is important to note that variations in height measurements can occur due to several factors, including posture, time of day, and the method of measurement. For instance, individuals can measure taller in the morning due to spinal decompression during sleep, while height may decrease slightly by the end of the day due to the compression of spinal discs.

Regarding your concern about mitral valve prolapse and its potential impact on your heart as you continue to grow, it is essential to consult with a healthcare provider. Mitral valve prolapse is a condition where the valve between the heart's left atrium and left ventricle does not close properly, which can lead to various symptoms, including palpitations or shortness of breath. However, in many cases, individuals with mild mitral valve prolapse lead normal, healthy lives without significant complications.
If you are experiencing anxiety about your height increase and its implications for your health, it may be beneficial to discuss your concerns with a cardiologist or an endocrinologist. They can provide a thorough evaluation of your heart health and hormone levels to ensure that everything is functioning as it should.
In summary, while it is not typical to see significant height increases after the age of 25, minor fluctuations can occur due to various factors. Your family history of height may also play a role in your growth. It is crucial to monitor your health, especially with your existing heart condition, and seek medical advice if you have any concerns. Regular check-ups and open communication with your healthcare providers can help you manage your health effectively and address any worries you may have about your growth and overall well-being.
