Pain in the ribs during breathing?
I would like to ask the doctor, in mid-July, I woke up in the middle of the night and while breathing normally, I suddenly felt a sharp pain in my left rib.
I have experienced this before, but it usually goes away in a few minutes.
However, this time it was particularly painful, and the next day I felt pain even while breathing.
It has improved a lot since then, and breathing is not as painful, but I still haven't fully recovered.
When I sit up straight and turn to the left, I still feel a slight sharp pain in my left rib and cannot fully stretch.
I went to an orthopedic clinic, and they said it was a bruise and only prescribed anti-inflammatory medication.
Since it has been almost two months, I am a bit worried.
Is there any way to recover faster? I have been applying heat every night.

Dr. Yin Xinbei reply Rehabilitation
Please continue to apply heat until the symptoms completely disappear.
Additionally, you can use anti-inflammatory and analgesic ointment to massage along the ribs in a back-and-forth motion (with enough pressure to feel soreness).
At night, you may use anti-inflammatory and analgesic patches while sleeping.

More Info
Rib pain during breathing can be a concerning and uncomfortable experience. It often arises from various causes, including muscle strain, rib fractures, or even inflammation of the cartilage connecting the ribs to the sternum (costochondritis). In your case, it seems that you experienced a sudden sharp pain in your rib area, which has persisted for several weeks. This type of pain can be particularly distressing, especially when it affects your ability to breathe comfortably or engage in physical activities.
Understanding the Causes
1. Muscle Strain: One of the most common causes of rib pain is a muscle strain. This can occur from sudden movements, awkward sleeping positions, or even coughing. The intercostal muscles, which are located between the ribs, can become strained and lead to pain that worsens with movement or deep breathing.
2. Rib Injury: If you experienced a sudden sharp pain, it could indicate a rib injury, such as a bruise or fracture. While fractures may be visible on X-rays, sometimes bruising or minor injuries may not show up, leading to persistent pain.
3. Costochondritis: This is an inflammation of the cartilage that connects the ribs to the sternum. It can cause sharp pain that may worsen with certain movements or deep breaths.
4. Nerve Irritation: Conditions like intercostal neuralgia, where the nerves running between the ribs become irritated, can also lead to sharp, stabbing pain.
Recovery Tips
1. Rest: It’s essential to allow your body to heal. Avoid activities that exacerbate the pain, such as heavy lifting or intense exercise. However, gentle movements and stretches can help maintain flexibility without putting too much strain on the ribs.
2. Heat Therapy: As you mentioned, you are already using heat therapy. Applying a warm compress or heating pad to the affected area can help relax the muscles and alleviate pain. Continue this practice, especially before bedtime or after activities that may aggravate the pain.
3. Pain Relief Medications: Over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications, such as ibuprofen or naproxen, can help reduce pain and inflammation. If you have any allergies or contraindications, consult your healthcare provider for alternatives.
4. Gentle Stretching: Once the acute pain subsides, consider incorporating gentle stretching exercises to improve flexibility and reduce stiffness. Focus on stretches that target the upper body and rib cage.
5. Physical Therapy: If the pain persists, consider consulting a physical therapist. They can provide tailored exercises and treatments to help strengthen the muscles around the ribs and improve your range of motion.
6. Posture Awareness: Maintaining good posture can alleviate some of the strain on your ribs. When sitting or standing, ensure your shoulders are back and your spine is aligned.
7. Breathing Exercises: Deep breathing exercises can help expand the lungs and improve your breathing capacity. Try inhaling deeply through your nose, holding for a few seconds, and exhaling slowly through your mouth. This can also help reduce anxiety related to pain.
When to Seek Further Medical Attention
If your symptoms do not improve within a few weeks, or if you experience increased pain, difficulty breathing, or any other concerning symptoms, it is crucial to seek further medical evaluation. Additional imaging studies, such as a CT scan, may be necessary to rule out more serious conditions.
In summary, rib pain can be caused by various factors, and while it often resolves with conservative treatment, it’s essential to monitor your symptoms closely. Continue with heat therapy, rest, and gentle stretching, and consult your healthcare provider if your condition does not improve. Your health and comfort are paramount, and addressing any underlying issues will help you return to your normal activities as soon as possible.
