Regarding old injuries from being hit by a car?
About a year ago, I was a pedestrian and was hit by a car, causing me to be thrown into the air and land on my back.
Recently, over the past month or two, I have started to experience soreness in the area where I landed, extending from my back down to my calves.
This discomfort only occurs after standing or walking for extended periods.
Should I consider physical therapy for this? Thank you.

Hello: It seems that there is a strain in your back.
An examination is necessary to determine if there is any injury to the spine before a diagnosis and treatment can be made.
Wishing you safety and health.

When considering whether to seek rehabilitation for old injuries sustained in a car accident, it is essential to evaluate several factors, including the nature of the injury, the duration of symptoms, and the impact on daily activities. In your case, it sounds like you experienced a significant trauma as a pedestrian, which could lead to various musculoskeletal issues, particularly if you landed on your back.
Firstly, it is important to understand that injuries from car accidents can manifest in different ways. Some injuries may be immediate and obvious, while others can develop over time. In your situation, the delayed onset of pain in your back and legs suggests that there may be underlying issues that need to be addressed. This could include soft tissue injuries, such as strains or sprains, or even more complex conditions like herniated discs or nerve impingement.
The fact that you are experiencing pain primarily during prolonged standing or walking indicates that your body is responding to certain physical stresses. This could be due to muscle fatigue, improper biomechanics, or even compensatory movements that have developed over time as a result of your initial injury. Rehabilitation can play a crucial role in addressing these issues. A physical therapist can assess your condition and develop a tailored rehabilitation program that focuses on strengthening the affected areas, improving flexibility, and correcting any postural or movement dysfunctions.
Moreover, rehabilitation is not only about treating pain but also about preventing future injuries. Engaging in a structured rehab program can help you regain strength and mobility, which is particularly important if you plan to return to activities that involve physical exertion. It can also provide you with strategies to manage pain and improve your overall function.
In addition to physical therapy, it may be beneficial to explore other modalities such as chiropractic care, acupuncture, or massage therapy, depending on your specific needs and preferences. These approaches can complement traditional rehabilitation and provide additional relief from pain.
It is also worth noting that if your symptoms persist or worsen, it may be necessary to undergo further diagnostic imaging, such as X-rays or MRIs, to rule out any serious underlying conditions. This is especially important if you experience any new symptoms, such as numbness, tingling, or weakness in your legs, as these could indicate nerve involvement.
In conclusion, based on your description of ongoing pain and discomfort related to your previous injury, seeking rehabilitation is advisable. A comprehensive evaluation by a healthcare professional can help determine the best course of action for your recovery. Rehabilitation can not only alleviate your current symptoms but also empower you with the tools and knowledge to maintain your health and prevent future injuries. Remember, it is always better to address potential issues sooner rather than later, as early intervention can lead to better outcomes and a quicker return to your normal activities.
