Rubber band ligation for internal hemorrhoids?
Hello Doctor, I would like to ask a question.
I recently had a second hemorrhoid banding procedure, which was very close to the anal opening.
Today is the 7th day, and I still notice some pinkish blood stains when wiping after using the restroom.
I also observe blood residue on the surface of my stool, and there is a slight stinging sensation in the anal area during bowel movements.
Is this normal? How long will it take to heal? The pain from the second procedure is significantly more than the first, so I wanted to inquire.
Thank you!

It is normal to experience slight bleeding within a week after hemorrhoid ligation, as long as there is no severe pain or significant bleeding.
This condition may last for up to another week.
If bleeding persists after two weeks, it is advisable to consult the physician who performed the ligation to check for any issues.
If necessary, medication can also be prescribed.

More Info
After undergoing a second internal hemorrhoid ligation, it is not uncommon to experience some post-surgical symptoms, especially within the first week following the procedure. The symptoms you describe, including the presence of pink blood on toilet paper, blood on the stool, and a slight stinging sensation during bowel movements, can be considered typical in the recovery phase. However, it is essential to understand the context of these symptoms and what to expect during the healing process.
Understanding Post-Surgical Symptoms
1. Bleeding: It is normal to see some blood after hemorrhoid surgery, particularly in the first week. The ligation procedure involves cutting off the blood supply to the hemorrhoid, which can lead to tissue necrosis and eventual sloughing off. This process can cause minor bleeding as the area heals. If the bleeding is minimal and resolves quickly, it is generally not a cause for concern. However, if you notice significant bleeding or if it persists, you should contact your healthcare provider.
2. Pain and Discomfort: Pain levels can vary significantly from one individual to another and can also differ between surgeries. The stinging sensation you are experiencing may be due to irritation of the anal area or the healing process of the ligated tissue. Pain management is crucial, and your doctor may recommend over-the-counter pain relievers or prescribe medication to help alleviate discomfort.
3. Healing Timeline: The recovery period after hemorrhoid ligation can vary. Generally, patients can expect to see improvement within a week or two, but complete healing may take several weeks. During this time, it is vital to maintain a high-fiber diet and stay hydrated to prevent constipation, which can exacerbate pain and lead to complications.
4. Bowel Movements: It is essential to avoid straining during bowel movements, as this can increase pain and lead to further bleeding. If you are experiencing difficulty with bowel movements, consider using a stool softener or fiber supplement to ease the process.
Recommendations for Recovery
- Diet: Focus on a diet rich in fiber, including fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. This will help soften your stool and make bowel movements easier, reducing strain on the surgical site.
- Hydration: Drink plenty of fluids to help maintain soft stools and prevent constipation.
- Pain Management: Use over-the-counter pain relief as needed, and follow your doctor's recommendations regarding pain management.
- Follow-Up: It is crucial to attend follow-up appointments with your healthcare provider to monitor your recovery and address any concerns. If your symptoms worsen or if you experience severe pain, significant bleeding, or signs of infection (such as fever or increased swelling), seek medical attention promptly.
- Activity Level: Avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activities during the initial recovery phase. Gentle walking can promote circulation and aid in healing.
Conclusion
While some bleeding and discomfort are expected after internal hemorrhoid ligation, it is essential to monitor your symptoms closely. If you have concerns about the severity of your symptoms or if they do not improve within a reasonable timeframe, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for further evaluation and guidance. Each individual's recovery is unique, and your doctor can provide personalized advice based on your specific situation.
