My shoulder and neck?
Hello, Doctor.
I am currently a sophomore in college, and I have been troubled by a long-standing issue.
I have noticed that my physique is different from others; my neck is longer than average, and my shoulder width is shorter than that of most people.
I find this body shape quite unattractive, which has led to feelings of inferiority and a reluctance to engage with others.
I would like to ask if there are ways to improve this situation.
For instance, would doing push-ups help to make my shoulders broader? I would greatly appreciate your guidance on this matter!

Dr.
Shih-Chi Ming from Orthopedics responded: The length of the neck and the width of the shoulders cannot be improved.
In fact, there is a culture that particularly appreciates long necks, and they have been known to wear metal rings from a young age.
Beauty and ugliness are transient; it is important to open your mind to study, make friends, and work.

Dear Student,
Thank you for reaching out with your concerns regarding your body proportions, particularly your neck and shoulders. It's important to recognize that many individuals experience insecurities about their physical appearance, especially during the formative years of college. Your feelings of self-consciousness are valid, and it's commendable that you are seeking ways to improve your confidence.
First, let's address the anatomical aspects of your concerns. A longer neck and narrower shoulders can be influenced by genetics, and while you may feel that these features are not ideal, it's crucial to remember that everyone has unique body proportions. Embracing your individuality is a significant step toward building self-confidence.
To improve the appearance of your shoulders and neck, there are several strategies you can consider:
1. Strength Training: Engaging in strength training exercises can help build muscle mass in your shoulders, which may create the illusion of broader shoulders. Exercises such as shoulder presses, lateral raises, and push-ups (including variations like incline push-ups) can be beneficial. While push-ups primarily target the chest and triceps, they also engage the shoulders and can contribute to overall upper body strength.
2. Posture Improvement: Good posture can significantly affect how your body proportions are perceived. Practicing exercises that strengthen your core and back muscles can help you maintain an upright posture, which may make your shoulders appear broader and your neck more aligned. Yoga and Pilates are excellent for improving posture and flexibility.
3. Stretching: Incorporating stretching routines can help alleviate tension in your neck and shoulders. This can improve your overall appearance and comfort. Focus on stretches that target the neck, shoulders, and upper back.
4. Clothing Choices: The way you dress can also influence how your body proportions are perceived. Wearing structured tops or jackets with shoulder pads can create the illusion of broader shoulders. Additionally, V-neck or scoop-neck shirts can elongate the neck visually, balancing your proportions.
5. Mindfulness and Self-Acceptance: Building confidence is not solely about physical changes. Practicing mindfulness and self-acceptance can help you develop a more positive self-image. Consider engaging in activities that promote self-esteem, such as journaling about your strengths, practicing positive affirmations, or seeking support from friends and family.
6. Professional Guidance: If your concerns about your body image are significantly impacting your mental health, it might be helpful to speak with a counselor or therapist. They can provide strategies to cope with feelings of inadequacy and help you build a healthier self-image.
7. Nutrition: While exercise is crucial, maintaining a balanced diet can also support your fitness goals. Ensure you are consuming enough protein to aid muscle growth and recovery, along with a variety of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains for overall health.
In conclusion, while exercises like push-ups can help improve your shoulder width, a holistic approach that includes strength training, posture improvement, and self-acceptance will yield the best results. Remember, confidence comes from within, and embracing your unique features is a vital part of that journey. Surround yourself with supportive individuals who appreciate you for who you are, and take small steps toward your goals.
Best of luck on your journey to self-improvement, and remember that you are not alone in your feelings. Many people share similar concerns, and with time and effort, you can cultivate a more positive self-image.
Sincerely,
