Is Your Boyfriend's Weight Loss Normal? Healthy Changes - Family Medicine

Weight issues

Hello, doctor.
My boyfriend (19 years old, 173 cm tall, weighing about 72 kg two months ago and now approximately 66 kg) has lost about 6 kg in the past two months without intentionally dieting.
His sleep schedule has improved to going to bed around 11 PM and waking up at 6 AM, compared to his previous schedule of going to bed around 1 or 2 AM and waking up around 11 AM or noon.
He has hardly consumed sugary drinks (only unsweetened green tea or black tea) and drinks about one iced Americano daily.
Is this rate of weight loss normal? He appears to have visibly lost weight in photos.
Thank you for your response.

Hello, Xuan:
In your letter, you mentioned that your boyfriend has lost 6 kilograms in two months.
Weight changes must be assessed by considering both total caloric intake (energy input) and activity level (energy expenditure).
During these two months, his sleep duration decreased from 10 hours to 7 hours per day, which can lead to a faster metabolism and increased caloric expenditure while awake.
Additionally, he has almost completely avoided sugary beverages, which can indeed contribute to weight loss.

However, to determine if this rate of weight loss is normal, we need to evaluate his physical activity level (exercise), total caloric intake, and the balance of his diet comprehensively.
You may want to ask him if he is experiencing any physical discomfort.
If there are no unusual symptoms, it is advisable to maintain a balanced diet that is low in carbohydrates and fats, but high in fiber and protein, along with a regular exercise routine.

It would be beneficial to record his weight and waist circumference monthly.
If there are any concerns, he should consult a physician in family medicine or a metabolic clinic for further discussion.

More Info

When assessing your boyfriend's weight loss of approximately 6 kilograms over two months, it's essential to consider several factors related to health, lifestyle changes, and overall well-being. At 19 years old, with a height of 173 cm and a previous weight of 72 kg, your boyfriend's current weight of 66 kg places him within a healthy Body Mass Index (BMI) range. However, the rate of weight loss and the context surrounding it are crucial for determining whether this change is normal or potentially concerning.

Firstly, a weight loss of 6 kg over two months translates to about 0.75 kg per week, which is generally considered a healthy rate of weight loss. This rate aligns with recommendations from health professionals, who typically suggest that a safe and sustainable weight loss is around 0.5 to 1 kg per week. The fact that your boyfriend did not intentionally pursue a weight loss regimen but instead experienced changes in his lifestyle—such as improved sleep patterns and reduced consumption of sugary beverages—can contribute positively to weight management.

The transition from a late-night schedule (sleeping around 1-2 AM and waking around 11-12 PM) to a more regular sleep pattern (sleeping at 11 PM and waking at 6 AM) can significantly impact metabolism and overall health. Adequate sleep is crucial for hormonal balance, appetite regulation, and energy levels. Poor sleep can lead to increased cravings for high-calorie foods and can negatively affect metabolic processes. Therefore, the improvement in his sleep schedule may have contributed to a more efficient metabolism and, consequently, weight loss.

Additionally, the reduction in sugary beverage intake is a significant factor in weight management. Sugary drinks are high in calories and can contribute to weight gain if consumed in excess. By replacing these with unsweetened beverages like green tea or black coffee, your boyfriend is likely reducing his overall caloric intake, which can further facilitate weight loss.

However, while the weight loss appears to be within a normal range, it is essential to monitor for any accompanying symptoms that may indicate underlying health issues. If your boyfriend experiences fatigue, weakness, or any other concerning symptoms, it would be prudent to consult a healthcare professional. Regular check-ins on his weight, dietary habits, and physical activity levels can help ensure that he maintains a healthy lifestyle without unintended consequences.

In summary, your boyfriend's weight loss seems to be within a normal and healthy range, especially considering the positive lifestyle changes he has made. Encouraging him to maintain a balanced diet rich in nutrients, engage in regular physical activity, and continue prioritizing good sleep hygiene will support his overall health and well-being. If any unusual symptoms arise or if there are concerns about his weight loss, seeking advice from a healthcare provider would be a wise step.
