Weight loss diet issues?

Hello, Doctor.
I have been trying to lose weight recently, but I have encountered some issues and would like to ask for your advice:
1.
Can I drink ice water while trying to lose weight? I have seen conflicting information online, which has left me quite confused.

2.
How much water should I drink while losing weight? I have heard various recommendations such as body weight multiplied by 30, body weight multiplied by 40, and at least two liters, so which one is correct?
3.
I have a habit of drinking unsweetened barley tea.
Can barley tea really replace water? If not, how much should I drink in a day?
These are my questions, and I hope you can provide me with accurate answers.
Thank you.

Hi: Regarding whether it is advisable to drink ice water during a weight loss period, traditional Chinese medicine practitioners typically do not recommend it, especially for individuals with digestive issues or women with a colder constitution.
From a Western medicine perspective, the body can self-regulate its temperature, and consuming ice water may provide a temporary boost in metabolic rate.
It is suggested that the temperature of the water consumed daily should be based on individual health conditions.

For water intake, a general guideline is to consume 30 cc of water per kilogram of body weight.
If engaging in outdoor activities, this can be increased to 35 cc as a recommended daily intake.

Unsweetened barley tea does not affect weight loss and is caffeine-free, making it a suitable alternative for those who do not prefer plain water.

Wishing you health and happiness!
Sincerely,

When it comes to weight loss and dietary habits, hydration plays a crucial role. Let's address your questions one by one, providing clarity and guidance based on current nutritional science.

1. Can I drink ice water while trying to lose weight?
The debate around drinking ice water primarily revolves around its effects on metabolism and digestion. From a Western medical perspective, drinking cold water does not significantly hinder weight loss efforts. In fact, your body does expend a small amount of energy to warm the cold water to body temperature, which could marginally boost your metabolism. However, this effect is minimal and should not be relied upon as a weight loss strategy. If you enjoy ice water and it encourages you to drink more fluids, then feel free to include it in your diet. On the other hand, if you have digestive issues or find that cold beverages upset your stomach, it may be wise to stick to room temperature or warm water.

2. How much water should I drink while trying to lose weight?
The general recommendation for daily water intake is often calculated based on body weight. A common guideline is to drink approximately 30 to 35 milliliters of water per kilogram of body weight. For example, if you weigh 70 kg, you would aim for about 2,100 to 2,450 milliliters (or about 2.1 to 2.5 liters) of water daily. The "two liters" rule is a simplified guideline that works for many people, but individual needs can vary based on factors such as activity level, climate, and overall health. If you are physically active or live in a hot climate, you may need to increase your intake. Listening to your body is key; thirst is a reliable indicator that you need more fluids.

3. Can unsweetened barley tea replace water?
Unsweetened barley tea (mugicha) can indeed be a good alternative to plain water, especially for those who find it challenging to drink enough fluids throughout the day. Barley tea is caffeine-free and hydrating, making it a suitable choice for hydration. However, it should not completely replace water in your diet. Aim to consume a mix of water and other hydrating beverages, including herbal teas, to ensure you meet your hydration needs. If you enjoy barley tea, it can be a refreshing addition, but try to maintain a balance with plain water to ensure optimal hydration.

In summary, while you can enjoy ice water, focus on drinking an adequate amount of fluids based on your body weight and activity level. Unsweetened barley tea can complement your hydration strategy but should not be your sole source of fluids. Remember that staying hydrated is essential for overall health and can support your weight loss efforts by helping to control hunger and maintain energy levels. If you have any specific health concerns or conditions, consulting with a healthcare professional or a registered dietitian can provide personalized recommendations tailored to your needs.
