Health food issues?

Hello, I would like to ask if it is safe to take natto extract, rhodiola, fish oil, elderberry, and astaxanthin together.
Specifically regarding natto extract, some claim that it contains Monacolin K, which is a pharmaceutical component similar to Lovastatin, and that it may harm the kidneys and liver.
Is this true? I have a family history of hypertension, with my blood pressure usually around 130, and a BMI of 26, so I am looking to take some health supplements along with exercise to manage my condition.

S, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2023/08/25

Dr. Cai Xiuwen reply Nutrition

Hello, the definition of health food is that it must pass health food certification to be classified as such.
Essentially, it is considered food that serves as an adjunct to health.
I am not sure about the sources of the dietary supplements you consume, but I recommend using natural foods as your primary source, incorporating a variety of vegetables and fruits, and engaging in exercise to support vascular elasticity and control weight to maintain normal blood pressure.
Wishing you peace and good health.

When considering the combination of nattokinase, fish oil, and other supplements such as blackcurrant and astaxanthin, it is essential to understand both the potential benefits and risks associated with these substances.
Nattokinase is an enzyme derived from natto, a traditional Japanese food made from fermented soybeans. It is known for its ability to break down fibrin, which can help improve blood circulation and reduce the risk of blood clots. However, it also has blood-thinning properties, which can be a concern when combined with other supplements that affect blood coagulation, such as fish oil. Fish oil is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which also have anticoagulant effects. Therefore, taking both nattokinase and fish oil together could potentially increase the risk of bleeding, especially if you are on other anticoagulant medications or have bleeding disorders.

Astaxanthin, a powerful antioxidant found in certain algae and seafood, is often taken for its anti-inflammatory properties and potential cardiovascular benefits. It is generally considered safe and can complement the effects of fish oil, as both support heart health.
Blackcurrant is rich in anthocyanins, which are known for their antioxidant properties. It may help improve circulation and support eye health. There are no significant known interactions between blackcurrant and the other supplements mentioned, making it a safe addition to your regimen.

Regarding the concern about Monacolin K in nattokinase, it is important to clarify that while nattokinase is derived from natto, it does not contain Monacolin K, which is the active compound found in red yeast rice that has a similar effect to statin medications like lovastatin. Monacolin K can indeed affect liver and kidney function, particularly in high doses or in individuals with pre-existing conditions. However, nattokinase itself is generally considered safe when taken at recommended dosages.
Given your family history of hypertension and your current blood pressure readings, it is wise to approach supplementation with caution. While nattokinase and fish oil can be beneficial for cardiovascular health, it is essential to monitor your blood pressure regularly and consult with a healthcare provider before starting any new supplements, especially if you are considering combining multiple products.
In summary, you can safely combine nattokinase, fish oil, blackcurrant, and astaxanthin, but it is crucial to be aware of their blood-thinning effects and to consult with a healthcare professional to ensure that this combination is appropriate for your individual health needs. Additionally, maintaining a balanced diet and regular exercise will further support your cardiovascular health and overall well-being.
