Neck problems
Hello doctor, two months ago I underwent vertical cervical traction in the rehabilitation department, pulling 5 kilograms.
Since it was my first time, I felt a bit nervous.
After the session, I noticed an itching sensation at the back of my right head, extending from behind my ear to the cervical spine (sometimes I can feel it on my scalp, and sometimes I can't).
In the past month, I occasionally experienced slight tingling and warmth in that area, and recently I've developed quite a few pimples on my neck.
I would like to ask the doctor what symptoms might occur with a cervical strain.
Is it possible to experience itching and a sensation of warmth?

Dr. Wang Zhaomin reply Rehabilitation
Cervical traction is a safe physical therapy method that most people can tolerate; however, a small number of patients may not be able to withstand the pressure of traction and may experience discomfort such as pain, soreness, numbness, or dizziness.
There may also be sensations of heat or itching.
If you experience any discomfort during traction, please notify your therapist immediately and discuss appropriate treatment options with your outpatient physician.

Neck injuries, particularly those resulting from trauma or strain, can lead to a variety of symptoms that may be concerning for patients. In your case, you mentioned experiencing itching, a sensation of warmth, and the appearance of acne on your neck after undergoing traction therapy. Let's delve into the potential causes of these symptoms and what they might indicate regarding your neck injury and treatment.
Firstly, it's important to understand that traction therapy is a common physical treatment used to relieve pressure on the cervical spine and alleviate pain associated with conditions like herniated discs or muscle strain. While many patients tolerate traction well, some may experience discomfort or unusual sensations, especially if they are tense or anxious during the procedure. The itching sensation you described could be attributed to several factors:
1. Nerve Irritation: Traction can sometimes irritate the nerves in the cervical region. This irritation may manifest as tingling, itching, or even a burning sensation. If the traction was applied with significant force or if your muscles were tense, it could exacerbate these sensations.
2. Muscle Tension and Spasms: Following traction, your muscles may react by tightening or spasming, which can lead to discomfort and unusual sensations in the neck and surrounding areas. This could explain the itching and warmth you felt, as muscle tension can sometimes cause localized heat and discomfort.
3. Skin Reactions: The appearance of acne or skin irritation on your neck could be related to several factors, including stress, changes in skin care routines, or even the friction from the traction device or your clothing. Stress and anxiety can lead to hormonal changes that may trigger acne, particularly in sensitive areas like the neck.
4. Psychosomatic Responses: Anxiety and stress can amplify physical sensations, making you more aware of discomfort or unusual feelings in your body. If you were nervous during the traction therapy, this could contribute to heightened sensitivity to sensations like itching or warmth.
Regarding the symptoms of neck injuries, common manifestations include:
- Pain: This can range from mild discomfort to severe pain, often exacerbated by movement or certain positions.
- Numbness or Tingling: This may occur if nerves are compressed or irritated.
- Muscle Spasms: Tightness and spasms in the neck and shoulder muscles are common.
- Headaches: Tension headaches can arise from neck strain.
- Reduced Range of Motion: Difficulty turning or tilting the head may occur.
If you continue to experience symptoms such as persistent itching, warmth, or any new symptoms, it is essential to consult with your healthcare provider. They may recommend further evaluation, such as imaging studies or a referral to a specialist, to rule out any underlying issues that may require more targeted treatment.
In the meantime, consider the following self-care strategies:
- Heat Therapy: Applying a warm compress to the neck can help relax tense muscles and alleviate discomfort.
- Gentle Stretching: Engaging in gentle neck stretches can improve flexibility and reduce tension.
- Stress Management: Techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, or yoga can help manage anxiety and reduce muscle tension.
- Skin Care: Ensure that your skin is clean and moisturized to prevent irritation and acne.
In summary, while traction therapy can be beneficial for neck injuries, it is not uncommon to experience some discomfort or unusual sensations afterward. Monitoring your symptoms and maintaining open communication with your healthcare provider will be key to managing your recovery effectively.
