Shoulder pain?

About two years ago, I started experiencing shoulder pain, which was not frequent at first.
However, recently, it seems to have increased in frequency, possibly due to my tendency to be overly stressed or busy.
I often feel significant shoulder discomfort and find that I need to get massages to alleviate the pain.
However, as soon as I become busy or stressed again, the pain returns, and I even experience some tingling sensations.
I would like to know how I can improve this condition.
Thank you, and please reply to [email protected].
I would greatly appreciate it!

Dr. Shi Qiming reply Orthopedics

Dear Friend,
There are many causes of shoulder pain, usually related to external and internal factors such as work fatigue, excessive physical activity, and stress in daily life.
The general treatment approach starts with rehabilitation therapy, followed by medication.
At home, heat therapy can also be beneficial, and swimming is a good treatment option as well.

Shoulder pain, especially when linked to stress and prolonged computer use, is a common issue that many individuals face in today's fast-paced work environment. The discomfort you are experiencing may stem from a combination of muscle tension, poor posture, and stress-related factors. Here are some effective strategies to alleviate shoulder pain and improve your overall well-being:

1. Ergonomic Workspace Setup
- Adjust Your Chair and Desk: Ensure that your chair supports your lower back and that your feet are flat on the ground. Your computer screen should be at eye level to prevent straining your neck.

- Keyboard and Mouse Position: Keep your keyboard and mouse close enough to avoid reaching, which can strain your shoulders. Your elbows should be at a 90-degree angle.

2. Regular Breaks and Movement
- Take Frequent Breaks: Every 30 to 45 minutes, stand up, stretch, and move around. This helps to relieve muscle tension and improve circulation.

- Incorporate Stretching: Simple shoulder stretches can be beneficial. Try shoulder rolls, neck stretches, and arm stretches to relieve tension.

3. Stress Management Techniques
- Mindfulness and Relaxation: Practices such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, or yoga can significantly reduce stress levels and help alleviate muscle tension.

- Physical Activity: Regular exercise, even light activities like walking or swimming, can help reduce stress and improve muscle tone, which may alleviate shoulder pain.

4. Massage and Physical Therapy
- Professional Massage: Regular massages can help relieve muscle tightness and improve blood flow to the affected areas.

- Physical Therapy: A physical therapist can provide tailored exercises and treatments to strengthen shoulder muscles and improve flexibility.

5. Heat and Cold Therapy
- Heat Therapy: Applying a warm compress or heating pad to your shoulders can help relax tense muscles and improve blood flow.

- Cold Therapy: If there is swelling or inflammation, applying ice packs can help reduce pain and numb the area.

6. Medication and Supplements
- Over-the-Counter Pain Relief: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen can help reduce pain and inflammation. However, consult with a healthcare provider before starting any medication.

- Muscle Relaxants: If muscle tension is severe, your doctor may prescribe muscle relaxants. However, be cautious of their sedative effects, especially if taken during the day.

7. Posture Awareness
- Maintain Good Posture: Be mindful of your posture throughout the day. Keep your shoulders back and down, and avoid slouching.

- Strengthening Exercises: Engage in exercises that strengthen your upper back and shoulder muscles to improve posture and reduce strain.

8. Consult a Healthcare Professional
- If your shoulder pain persists despite trying these strategies, it may be beneficial to consult a healthcare professional. They can assess your condition and recommend further treatment options, including imaging studies if necessary.

Conclusion
Addressing shoulder pain requires a multifaceted approach that includes ergonomic adjustments, regular movement, stress management, and possibly medical intervention. By implementing these strategies, you can significantly reduce shoulder discomfort and improve your overall quality of life. Remember, consistency is key, and making small changes can lead to significant improvements over time. If you continue to experience pain or if it worsens, do not hesitate to seek professional medical advice.
