Increase in height?
My parents are 161 cm and 153 cm tall, respectively.
Although I am around 170 cm, which is not considered short, living abroad makes me feel that this height is insufficient.
I haven't grown taller in the past two months.
Is there still a chance for me to grow another 6 to 8 cm? Also, why do I measure 171.5 cm in the morning but less than 170 cm after school?

Dr. Hu Yuqing reply Nutrition
Dietitian Hu Yu-Ching responded: For a 14-year-old boy, TT, who is 170 cm tall and falls in the 90th percentile according to the growth chart, it is typical for growth to occur in phases—periods of height increase followed by periods of weight gain.
At 14 years old, there is still potential for growth, but this cannot be guaranteed as it is influenced by factors beyond individual control, such as genetic factors.
However, there are actions that can be taken: 1.
Ensure adequate sleep, maintain a regular schedule, and avoid staying up late, as this affects the secretion of growth hormones; 2.
Engage in moderate exercise.

The question of whether one can still grow taller after a certain age is a common concern, especially among adolescents and young adults. Generally, the growth of height is primarily determined by the growth plates in the long bones, which are areas of developing cartilage tissue. These growth plates remain open during childhood and adolescence, allowing for height increase. However, by the late teens to early twenties, these growth plates typically close, marking the end of significant height growth.
In your case, at around 170 cm, you are already within a normal height range, but it’s understandable to want to be taller, especially if you feel that your height is not sufficient in your environment. The possibility of growing an additional 6-8 cm at your age largely depends on whether your growth plates have closed. If you are 17 years old, there may still be a chance for slight growth, but this is not guaranteed.
Regarding your daily height variations, it is quite normal for individuals to measure slightly taller in the morning than in the evening. This phenomenon occurs due to the compression of the intervertebral discs in the spine throughout the day. When you lie down at night, the discs rehydrate and expand, allowing for a taller measurement in the morning. By the end of the day, gravity compresses these discs, leading to a decrease in height. The difference can range from 1 to 5 cm, depending on various factors such as hydration levels, physical activity, and overall spinal health.
To summarize, while there may still be a slight chance for you to grow taller, it is essential to understand that significant height increases after the growth plates have closed are unlikely. Engaging in regular physical activity, maintaining a balanced diet rich in calcium and vitamin D, and ensuring adequate sleep can support your overall health and well-being, but they may not necessarily lead to increased height if your growth plates are already closed.
If you are concerned about your height or any related health issues, it may be beneficial to consult with a healthcare professional, such as an endocrinologist or an orthopedic specialist, who can provide personalized advice based on your growth plate status and overall health. They may also conduct tests, such as X-rays, to determine whether your growth plates have fused, which would indicate that further height growth is unlikely.
In conclusion, while the desire to grow taller is understandable, it is crucial to focus on self-acceptance and confidence in your current height. Height does not define your worth or capabilities, and many successful individuals come in all shapes and sizes. Emphasizing your strengths and talents can often be more impactful than focusing solely on physical attributes.
