Why Can't I Gain Weight Despite Eating Well? My Body - Nutrition

Why can't I gain weight no matter what I eat?

I am 185 cm tall, but my weight has consistently remained at 60 kg.
I believe I eat quite well, as I have three meals a day and the portions are substantial.
However, I don't understand why I feel hungry shortly after eating.
I wonder if my inability to gain weight is due to poor digestion, irregular eating habits, or possibly even having intestinal worms.
According to my weight standards, I should be around 70 kg, but I struggle to even reach 65 kg.
The scale always fluctuates around 60 kg, sometimes showing 63 kg and other times 58 kg.
I hope the doctor can provide me with a solution to my concerns.
Thank you!

Hello! You are indeed too thin! The issues you mentioned, such as poor gastrointestinal function and the presence of roundworms, could contribute to your low weight.
I recommend that you consult a gastroenterologist.
Additionally, factors such as high levels of stress from school, irregular lifestyle habits, or smoking may also play a role.
Of course, an unbalanced diet is another critical aspect to consider.
In your inquiry, you mentioned that you eat three meals a day with substantial portions, but without a detailed description of your dietary content, it is difficult to assess whether your intake is adequate and balanced.
Therefore, I can only provide general advice: in addition to your three main meals, you could add three snacks, which could include breakfast, lunch, and evening snacks.
Snacks can be simply supplemented with milk or other foods containing carbohydrates and proteins.
Additionally, engaging in moderate exercise may help stimulate your appetite and increase your food intake.
Most major hospitals now offer nutrition consultation services, and it would be best to meet with a nutritionist to identify the underlying issues effectively, which can help resolve your concerns.
Sincerely, Dietitian Shih Kuei-Mei, Director of the Nutrition Department, Taoyuan Hospital, Ministry of Health and Welfare.

Gaining weight can be a frustrating experience, especially when you feel like you are eating enough and following a regular meal schedule. Based on your height of 185 cm and a weight that fluctuates around 60 kg, it seems you are currently underweight according to the Body Mass Index (BMI) standards, which suggest that a healthy weight for your height would be between approximately 70 kg to 85 kg.
There are several factors that could contribute to your difficulty in gaining weight, and understanding these can help you find a solution.
1. Metabolism: One of the most common reasons individuals struggle to gain weight is a high metabolic rate. If your body burns calories at a faster rate than average, you may find it challenging to consume enough calories to create a surplus for weight gain. This can be influenced by genetics, age, and muscle mass.
2. Diet Composition: While you mentioned that you eat three meals a day and feel you are consuming a good amount of food, it’s essential to consider the quality and composition of your diet. Are you consuming enough calorie-dense foods? Foods that are high in healthy fats (like avocados, nuts, and olive oil), proteins (like lean meats, dairy, and legumes), and complex carbohydrates (like whole grains and starchy vegetables) can help increase your caloric intake without requiring you to eat excessively large portions.

3. Digestive Health: You mentioned feeling hungry shortly after eating. This could indicate that your body is not absorbing nutrients effectively. Conditions such as malabsorption syndromes (like celiac disease or lactose intolerance) can prevent your body from utilizing the calories you consume. If you suspect this might be the case, it would be wise to consult a healthcare professional for testing.

4. Physical Activity: If you are physically active, especially with high-intensity workouts or endurance training, your body may require even more calories to maintain your weight. Consider tracking your physical activity and ensuring that your caloric intake matches your energy expenditure.

5. Medical Conditions: There are medical conditions that can affect weight gain, such as hyperthyroidism, diabetes, or gastrointestinal disorders. If you have concerns about your weight and overall health, it may be beneficial to consult with a healthcare provider. They can perform tests to rule out any underlying conditions that may be affecting your weight.

6. Stress and Mental Health: Psychological factors can also play a role in weight management. Stress, anxiety, and depression can affect appetite and eating habits. If you find that your emotional state impacts your eating, seeking support from a mental health professional may be beneficial.

To address your concerns, here are some actionable steps you can take:
- Increase Caloric Intake: Focus on incorporating more calorie-dense foods into your meals. For example, add nuts, seeds, and healthy oils to your dishes. Consider smoothies made with protein powder, nut butter, and fruits for a calorie-rich snack.

- Monitor Your Diet: Keep a food diary to track your daily caloric intake and ensure you are meeting your needs. This can help you identify patterns and areas for improvement.

- Consult a Nutritionist: A registered dietitian can help you create a personalized meal plan that meets your caloric and nutritional needs while considering your lifestyle and preferences.

- Medical Evaluation: If you continue to struggle with weight gain despite these efforts, it may be time to consult a healthcare provider for a thorough evaluation. They can check for any underlying health issues and provide tailored advice.

In conclusion, gaining weight is a multifaceted issue that can stem from various factors, including metabolism, diet composition, digestive health, physical activity, and potential medical conditions. By addressing these areas and seeking professional guidance, you can work towards achieving a healthier weight that aligns with your height and overall well-being.
