Military service can promote height growth?

Hello, doctor: I would like to ask—I've often heard people say that males can still grow taller during their military service.
My cousin, who is the same age as me and also 21 years old, should have passed the growth phase, but he noticeably grew 3 centimeters taller after finishing his military service this year.
I even have a friend who graduated with a master's degree at 24 and went to the military (his growth plates had already fused) and also grew 2 to 3 centimeters taller after his service.
Why is this happening?

Xiao Wei, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2006/07/12

Dr. Shi Qiming reply Orthopedics

Hello: Height is related to genetic factors and not influenced by military service.
However, maintaining a balanced diet and engaging in regular exercise can positively impact your height.
Thank you!

The question of whether military service can promote height growth is a complex one, often surrounded by anecdotal evidence and personal experiences. While it is commonly believed that young men may experience some height increase during their time in the military, the scientific basis for this claim is less straightforward.

Height growth is primarily determined by genetics, nutrition, and hormonal factors, particularly the presence of growth plates in the long bones. These growth plates, or epiphyseal plates, are areas of developing cartilage tissue near the ends of long bones. In males, these plates typically close around the ages of 16 to 18, while in females, they close earlier, around ages 14 to 16. Once these plates close, further height increase is generally not possible, regardless of external factors such as exercise or nutrition.

In the case of your cousin and friends who reportedly grew taller after military service, several factors could explain this phenomenon:
1. Posture and Muscle Development: Military training often emphasizes physical fitness, discipline, and proper posture. Improved posture can make individuals appear taller, even if their actual height has not changed. Additionally, increased muscle mass and strength can contribute to a more upright stance.

2. Nutrition: Military service often includes structured meal plans that may provide better nutrition than some individuals receive in their daily lives. A balanced diet rich in protein, calcium, and vitamins is crucial for bone health and can support growth during the critical years of development.

3. Physical Activity: Engaging in regular physical activity, which is a hallmark of military training, can stimulate the release of growth hormones. While this may not directly increase height in individuals whose growth plates have closed, it can contribute to overall health and well-being.

4. Delayed Growth Plate Closure: In some rare cases, individuals may have delayed closure of their growth plates, allowing for additional height increase even into their early twenties. This is not the norm, but it can happen.

5. Measurement Variability: Sometimes, the perception of having grown taller can be attributed to measurement errors or differences in how height is measured. Factors such as time of day (height can vary slightly throughout the day due to spinal compression) and the method of measurement can lead to discrepancies.

6. Psychological Factors: The experience of military service can also lead to increased confidence and self-perception, which might influence how individuals carry themselves and how tall they appear to others.

In conclusion, while military service may not directly cause an increase in height for most individuals, it can contribute to factors that enhance physical appearance and overall health. For those who are still in their growth years, maintaining a healthy lifestyle with proper nutrition and regular exercise is essential. However, for individuals whose growth plates have closed, significant height increases are unlikely. If there are concerns about growth or development, consulting with a healthcare professional or an endocrinologist can provide personalized insights and recommendations.
