Crying and fussing during a massage?
I am a mother of a baby who is over two months old.
I started giving her massages after her baths when she was just over a month old, and she really enjoyed it, often looking very happy.
However, since receiving the DPT (diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus) vaccine last Thursday, she suddenly dislikes the massage and cries very hard, seeming to be in pain.
After several attempts, I realized that she actually dislikes the smell of the massage lotion.
I would like to ask the doctor why my baby suddenly dislikes the massage lotion that she used to enjoy.
Is this related to the vaccination? Thank you!

Dr. Huang Zheming reply Pediatrics
Hello: I apologize for the delayed response due to my leave.
Experiencing unpleasant reactions during a massage while showering may be related to the vaccination (localized swelling).
For further details, please visit the hospital for a thorough examination.
Thank you!

It's understandable to be concerned when your baby suddenly dislikes something they previously enjoyed, especially after receiving a vaccination. In your case, your baby has shown a change in behavior towards massage following the DPT (Diphtheria, Pertussis, and Tetanus) vaccination. There are a few potential explanations for this change in behavior.
Firstly, it’s important to recognize that vaccinations can sometimes lead to mild side effects. Common reactions to the DPT vaccine include irritability, fever, and localized pain or swelling at the injection site. If your baby is experiencing discomfort or pain in the area where the vaccine was administered, this could make them more sensitive to touch, including during massage. Babies are very attuned to their bodies, and if they associate the massage with discomfort, they may begin to resist it.
Secondly, the change in your baby's reaction to the massage lotion could also be linked to a new sensory experience. Babies are constantly developing their senses, and they may suddenly become more aware of smells, textures, and sensations. If your baby has developed a dislike for the scent of the massage lotion, it could be a simple case of sensory aversion. This is not uncommon in infants, as they can be quite particular about certain smells or textures, and this can change rapidly as they grow.
Additionally, it’s worth considering that your baby may be going through a developmental phase. Infants often experience periods of increased fussiness or changes in behavior as they grow and develop new skills. This could coincide with the timing of the vaccination, leading to the perception that the two are related when they may not be.
If your baby continues to dislike massage or shows signs of discomfort, it may be helpful to try a different lotion or to skip the massage for a while to see if their preferences change. Always ensure that the products you use are safe for infants and free from harsh chemicals or allergens.
In conclusion, while it’s possible that your baby's sudden dislike for massage could be related to the DPT vaccination, it is more likely a combination of factors including potential discomfort from the injection, sensory aversion to the lotion, or a normal developmental phase. If you have ongoing concerns about your baby's behavior or health, it is always best to consult with your pediatrician for personalized advice and reassurance. They can provide guidance based on your baby's specific situation and help you determine the best course of action.
