Metabolism

Hello Dr.
Yang, I am petite and not very tall, and my thighs are not particularly thick.
I have tried many weight loss methods, such as the cocktail diet and acupuncture, but I still can't maintain it for long and remain round and soft (actually, my appetite is not that large).
I have allergies that cause my nose to run, and I have been coughing intermittently for a long time.
I visited a pulmonologist, and everything was fine with my lungs; however, I feel weak when breathing, and I also experience some constipation.
My metabolism doesn't seem to be very good.
Should I see a metabolic specialist, or do you have any other suggestions? (I really want to lose weight quickly ^^ Please help me think of a solution~) Thank you!

Ting Ting, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2009/05/06

Dr. Yang Hongzhi reply Internal Medicine

Obese individuals seeking weight loss can consult a metabolic specialist, but their expectations for weight loss should be realistic.
The standard treatment approach emphasizes diet and exercise, with medication as an adjunct.
A reasonable weight loss expectation is a reduction of 5-10%, and the likelihood of regaining weight is quite high.

Dear User,
It sounds like you are facing a challenging journey with weight loss, and I appreciate your openness in sharing your experiences. Weight management can be complex, especially when considering factors like metabolism, dietary habits, and overall health. Let’s break down some key points that may help you understand your situation better and provide actionable advice.

Understanding Metabolism
Metabolism refers to the biochemical processes that occur within your body to maintain life, including converting food into energy. Your metabolic rate can be influenced by several factors, including age, gender, muscle mass, and overall health. If you have a slower metabolism, it may be more challenging to lose weight, even with a reduced caloric intake.

The Role of Diet
From your description, it seems you have tried various diets, including extreme methods like the cocktail diet and acupuncture. While these approaches may yield short-term results, they often do not provide sustainable weight loss and can lead to yo-yo dieting, where weight is lost and then regained. This cycle can be detrimental to your metabolism and overall health.

Instead of extreme diets, consider adopting a balanced approach to nutrition. Here are some tips:
1. Balanced Meals: Focus on incorporating a variety of foods into your diet. Aim for meals that include lean proteins (like chicken, fish, or legumes), whole grains (like brown rice or quinoa), and plenty of fruits and vegetables. This will help ensure you are getting the necessary nutrients while managing your caloric intake.

2. Regular Eating Schedule: Instead of skipping meals or drastically reducing your food intake, try to eat smaller, more frequent meals throughout the day. This can help keep your metabolism active and prevent feelings of extreme hunger that may lead to overeating later.

3. Hydration: Staying hydrated is crucial for overall health and can aid in weight loss. Sometimes, our bodies confuse thirst with hunger, leading to unnecessary snacking. Aim to drink plenty of water throughout the day.

Incorporating Exercise
Physical activity is essential for weight management and overall health. Regular exercise can help boost your metabolism, improve your mood, and enhance your overall well-being. Here are some suggestions:
1. Find Activities You Enjoy: Whether it’s walking, dancing, swimming, or yoga, find physical activities that you enjoy. This will make it easier to stick with a routine.

2. Strength Training: Incorporating strength training into your routine can help build muscle mass, which can increase your resting metabolic rate. Even light weights or bodyweight exercises can be beneficial.

3. Consistency Over Intensity: Aim for consistency in your exercise routine rather than focusing on high-intensity workouts that may be difficult to maintain. Even moderate activity, like brisk walking for 30 minutes a day, can make a significant difference over time.

Addressing Health Concerns
You mentioned experiencing allergies and respiratory issues, as well as constipation. These health concerns can impact your overall well-being and may affect your ability to engage in physical activity. It’s essential to address these issues with a healthcare professional. Here are some steps you can take:
1. Consult a Specialist: Since you have respiratory concerns, consider consulting an allergist or a pulmonologist to address your symptoms. They can provide insights into managing your allergies and improving your respiratory health.

2. Metabolism Evaluation: If you suspect that your metabolism may be slower than average, consulting a metabolic specialist could be beneficial. They can perform tests to evaluate your metabolic rate and provide tailored advice.

3. Dietary Fiber: To address constipation, ensure you are consuming enough dietary fiber from fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. This can help regulate your digestive system.

Conclusion
Weight loss is a journey that requires patience, consistency, and a holistic approach. By focusing on balanced nutrition, regular physical activity, and addressing any underlying health concerns, you can create a sustainable path toward achieving your weight loss goals. Remember, it’s essential to be kind to yourself during this process and seek support from healthcare professionals, such as a registered dietitian or a physician, who can provide personalized guidance.

Best of luck on your journey to better health!
