Usage of dietary supplements
Hello Dr.
Liao,
After my retinal detachment laser surgery last year, I started taking GNC lutein (20mg) and bilberry (60mg) for maintenance, with a daily intake of one lutein capsule and two bilberry capsules.
Now, due to a busier work schedule, I would like to add more supplements, including vitamin K and zinc.
Could you please advise if taking these together could lead to any overdose issues or side effects? Thank you!
Max, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2010/07/12
Dr. Liao Lingmei reply Pharmacology
Dear Max: Currently, there are no reports of side effects associated with lutein at typical dosages.
However, consuming blackcurrant may lead to nausea as a side effect or interact with certain medications.
The "Kombucha + Zinc" product contains multiple ingredients, and it is essential to understand the content before assessing whether there is a risk of overdose with these two substances.
Dietary supplements are not medications, and their quality can vary based on the manufacturer's specifications.
Please consult a pharmacist at the point of purchase for comprehensive answers to your questions.
Wishing you all the best! Stay healthy and happy!

More Info
Combining supplements such as lutein, bilberry, and zinc can be a common practice among individuals seeking to support their eye health, especially after procedures like retinal detachment surgery. However, it is essential to consider the potential interactions and the risk of overconsumption when taking multiple supplements.
Lutein and Bilberry
Lutein is a carotenoid that is primarily found in green leafy vegetables and is known for its role in supporting eye health by filtering harmful blue light and acting as an antioxidant. Bilberry, on the other hand, is rich in anthocyanins, which are believed to improve night vision and overall eye health. Both of these supplements are generally considered safe and are often used together without significant adverse effects.
Zinc Supplementation
Zinc is a vital mineral that plays a crucial role in various bodily functions, including immune response and cellular metabolism. It is also important for maintaining healthy vision, as it is involved in the functioning of the retina and may help prevent age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for zinc varies by age and sex, but for adults, it is generally around 8-11 mg per day.
Potential Interactions and Overdose Risks
When considering the combination of these supplements, it is crucial to be aware of the following:
1. Dosage: Ensure that the total daily intake of each supplement does not exceed the recommended amounts. For example, if you are taking 20 mg of lutein and 60 mg of bilberry, you should check the zinc dosage to ensure it remains within safe limits. Most zinc supplements come in doses ranging from 15 mg to 50 mg, so be cautious about how much you are adding to your regimen.
2. Absorption Issues: High doses of zinc can interfere with the absorption of other minerals, such as copper. If you are taking zinc supplements, it may be beneficial to include a copper supplement or ensure that your diet contains adequate copper to prevent deficiency.
3. Side Effects: While lutein and bilberry are generally well-tolerated, excessive zinc intake can lead to side effects such as nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, stomach cramps, diarrhea, and headaches. Chronic high intake of zinc can also lead to more severe health issues, including immune dysfunction and lower levels of good cholesterol (HDL).
4. Consultation with Healthcare Provider: Given your history of retinal surgery, it is advisable to consult with your healthcare provider or a nutritionist before adding zinc or any new supplement to your regimen. They can provide personalized advice based on your specific health needs and any other medications you may be taking.
Conclusion
In summary, combining lutein, bilberry, and zinc can be beneficial for eye health, particularly after surgery. However, it is essential to monitor dosages carefully to avoid potential side effects and interactions. Always consult with a healthcare professional to ensure that your supplement regimen is safe and effective for your individual health circumstances. By doing so, you can support your eye health while minimizing the risk of adverse effects from over-supplementation.
