Can pregnant women drink sugarcane juice?

I am currently 34 weeks pregnant and I want my baby to grow a bit more.
I heard that eating more beef and drinking sugarcane juice can help.
However, I am concerned whether drinking sugarcane juice might increase the risk of gestational diabetes.
Would it be better if I drink half a cup of pure sugarcane juice mixed with water? Also, could you please advise on other foods that can help my baby gain weight?

Nicole, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2012/10/03

Dr. Lü Lizheng reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Dear Nicole,
Indeed, drinking sugarcane juice can increase the risk of gestational diabetes.
While it may lead to a faster increase in fetal weight, if it causes gestational diabetes, the fetus may become overweight but have slower organ maturity.
This can also increase the likelihood of the child developing diabetes later in life, as well as increase the chances of the mother experiencing complications during delivery or requiring a cesarean section.
Therefore, it is not recommended for pregnant women to consume sugarcane juice.
The fetus will achieve its appropriate weight naturally.
If a pregnant woman feels that her belly is smaller, it is usually just a subjective perception; in reality, the fetus is not smaller.
If a doctor indicates during an ultrasound that the fetus is smaller, it is likely due to measurement error, and the fetus is not actually smaller.
Even if it is indeed smaller, most cases are due to genetic factors and are not related to diet.
Therefore, it is not advisable for pregnant women to overeat, especially not to consume excessive amounts of sweet foods, as this is not only unhelpful but can also be harmful.
If a doctor indicates during an ultrasound that the fetus is smaller, the best approach is to directly ask the doctor for clarification on the possible reasons and for their recommendations.
Wishing you safety and health,

More Info

When it comes to consuming sugarcane juice during pregnancy, especially at 34 weeks gestation, there are several important considerations to keep in mind. While sugarcane juice is often perceived as a natural and healthy beverage, it is high in sugar content, which can pose risks for pregnant women, particularly concerning gestational diabetes.

Gestational diabetes is a condition that can develop during pregnancy, characterized by high blood sugar levels that can affect both the mother and the baby. Consuming high-sugar foods and beverages, such as sugarcane juice, can increase the risk of developing this condition. While you may be looking to increase your baby's weight, it's crucial to understand that excessive sugar intake does not necessarily lead to healthy weight gain. Instead, it can lead to complications such as macrosomia (an excessively large baby), which can increase the likelihood of cesarean delivery and other delivery complications.

If you are considering diluting sugarcane juice with water, it may reduce the sugar concentration somewhat, but it does not eliminate the risk associated with high sugar intake. Moderation is key, and it is advisable to limit sugary beverages and foods during pregnancy. Instead, focus on a balanced diet rich in whole foods, including lean proteins, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, which provide essential nutrients for both you and your baby without the excessive sugar.

In terms of foods that can help promote healthy weight gain for your baby, consider incorporating nutrient-dense options such as:
1. Lean Proteins: Foods like chicken, turkey, fish, eggs, and legumes can help support fetal growth and development.

2. Healthy Fats: Avocados, nuts, seeds, and olive oil are excellent sources of healthy fats that can contribute to your baby's brain development.

3. Whole Grains: Brown rice, quinoa, whole wheat bread, and oats provide essential carbohydrates and fiber, which can help maintain energy levels and support digestion.

4. Dairy or Dairy Alternatives: If you can tolerate them, dairy products like yogurt and cheese are good sources of calcium and protein, which are important for fetal development.

Additionally, staying hydrated is essential during pregnancy. If you find plain water unappealing, consider alternatives like herbal teas (caffeine-free), infused water with fruits, or homemade soups, which can help you meet your fluid needs without excessive sugar.

Lastly, if you have concerns about your baby's growth or your own health during pregnancy, it is always best to consult with your healthcare provider. They can provide personalized advice based on your medical history and current health status. Regular prenatal check-ups are crucial to monitor both your health and your baby's development, ensuring that you receive the best possible care during this important time.
