Appearance issues
I have always been very concerned about my appearance and proud of it, but three years ago, my nose was broken in an incident, and since then, I have become very withdrawn and unhappy.
It has been three years, and I visit the same ENT specialist every week.
He keeps telling me that my nose hasn't changed in height, but I don't believe him.
Is my life ruined? I have really struggled over these three years and have been taking psychiatric medication, but it hasn't helped.

Struggling with body image issues can be a deeply challenging experience, especially when it is compounded by a traumatic event such as a physical injury. Your situation highlights the complex interplay between physical health, mental health, and self-perception. It’s understandable that a significant change in your appearance, particularly one that is visible and associated with trauma, can lead to feelings of insecurity and self-doubt.
Firstly, it's important to acknowledge that your feelings are valid. The emotional impact of a physical injury, especially one that affects your face, can be profound. Many individuals experience a shift in their self-image after such events, which can lead to social withdrawal, anxiety, and depression. The fact that you have been struggling with these feelings for three years indicates that this is not just a superficial concern but rather a significant mental health challenge that requires attention.
You mentioned that you have been seeing an ENT specialist who reassures you that your nose has not changed significantly. However, it seems that this reassurance has not alleviated your concerns. This disconnect between medical reassurance and personal perception is not uncommon. Often, our self-image can be influenced more by our feelings and experiences than by objective reality. Cognitive distortions, such as magnifying perceived flaws or minimizing positive attributes, can exacerbate these feelings.
In terms of addressing your mental health, it’s crucial to explore therapeutic options that go beyond medication. While medications can be helpful for managing symptoms of anxiety and depression, they may not address the underlying issues related to body image and self-esteem. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is one effective approach that can help you challenge and reframe negative thoughts about your appearance. This therapy focuses on identifying cognitive distortions and replacing them with more balanced and realistic thoughts.
Additionally, engaging in mindfulness practices can be beneficial. Mindfulness encourages you to observe your thoughts and feelings without judgment, which can help reduce the intensity of negative emotions associated with body image. Techniques such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, or yoga can promote a sense of calm and help you reconnect with your body in a positive way.
Support groups can also provide a sense of community and understanding. Connecting with others who have experienced similar challenges can help you feel less isolated and more understood. Sharing your experiences and hearing others' stories can foster a sense of belonging and acceptance.
Lastly, consider discussing your ongoing struggles with your mental health provider. If the current medication is not effective, it may be worth exploring alternative medications or therapies. Sometimes, it takes time to find the right combination of treatments that work for you.
In summary, your journey through body image struggles is a complex interplay of physical and mental health challenges. It’s essential to seek a comprehensive approach that includes therapy, mindfulness, and possibly medication adjustments. Remember, healing is a process, and it’s okay to seek help along the way. You deserve to feel good about yourself and to lead a fulfilling life, regardless of the challenges you face.
