Can a person still grow taller at the age of 18?

I have loved playing video games since I was young, so from the third grade of elementary school until the second year of junior high, I would go to bed around 3 or 4 AM every day.
I was also very picky with food (I'm better now; I only refuse to eat mushrooms and eggplants).
I got my first period in the fifth grade of elementary school, and until the second year of junior high, I was afraid to drink milk or soy milk.
Now, due to rushing projects, I often stay up late and have gotten used to it.
I regret not being more responsible when I was younger, and now I feel like I haven't grown much in height or developed properly.
Is there anything I can do to remedy this? Please help!

Lulu, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/07/26

Dr. Cai Xiuwen reply Nutrition

Hello! Factors that influence height include genetics, but diet, exercise, and sleep duration can also be improved.
It is recommended that you visit a pediatric clinic to address your concerns, where a physician can conduct a thorough examination and provide advice.

At 18, many individuals wonder if they can still grow taller, especially if they feel they haven't reached their desired height. While it's true that most girls experience their peak growth spurts during puberty, which typically occurs between the ages of 10 and 14, there is still a possibility for some growth after this period, albeit limited. The growth plates in the bones, which are responsible for height increase, usually close after puberty, but some individuals may still have open growth plates into their late teens.

To address your concerns, it's essential to understand that nutrition and lifestyle choices play a significant role in growth potential. Here are some key points to consider:
1. Nutrition: A balanced diet rich in essential nutrients is crucial for growth. Since you mentioned that you were picky with food and avoided dairy products like milk and soy milk, it's important to incorporate these into your diet now. Dairy products are excellent sources of calcium and protein, both of which are vital for bone health. Aim for at least two cups of low-fat milk daily (approximately 240cc per cup) to support your nutritional needs. Additionally, include other sources of protein such as lean meats, fish, eggs, and legumes.

2. Vitamins and Minerals: Besides calcium, ensure you're getting enough Vitamin D, which helps the body absorb calcium. You can obtain Vitamin D through sunlight exposure (about 10-15 minutes daily) and foods like fatty fish (salmon, mackerel) and fortified products. Other important minerals include magnesium and zinc, which can be found in whole grains, nuts, seeds, and green leafy vegetables.

3. Regular Exercise: Physical activity is essential for overall health and can stimulate growth. Engaging in sports that involve jumping and stretching, such as basketball, swimming, or even skipping rope, can be beneficial. These activities help to strengthen your bones and muscles, promoting a healthy posture and potentially aiding in growth.

4. Sleep: Sleep is crucial for growth, especially during the teenage years when growth hormone is primarily secreted during deep sleep. Aim for 8-10 hours of quality sleep each night. Establishing a regular sleep schedule and avoiding late-night activities, such as gaming, can help improve your sleep quality.

5. Posture: Maintaining good posture can make a significant difference in how tall you appear. Slouching can compress your spine and make you look shorter than you are. Practice standing and sitting up straight, which can help you maximize your height.

6. Consult a Healthcare Professional: If you're concerned about your growth or overall health, consider consulting a healthcare professional. They can assess your growth plates through an X-ray and provide personalized advice based on your health history and current condition.

While it may feel like time is running out, making these lifestyle changes can still have a positive impact on your health and well-being. Remember, growth is not solely determined by genetics; your choices can influence your overall development. Embrace a balanced diet, stay active, prioritize sleep, and maintain a positive mindset. Even if you don't reach your desired height, focusing on your health and self-acceptance is equally important.
