Struggling with Emotional Turmoil: A High School Girl's Journey - Psychiatry

Sometimes it feels difficult to keep going..?

Hello doctor, I am an ordinary high school girl.
After experiencing many events, my emotions have been unstable.
I have had thoughts of suicide multiple times, and I also engage in self-harm.
I experience difficulty breathing and tremble all over, often crouching on the ground with tears streaming down my face.
Sometimes, I suddenly feel an overwhelming desire to avoid school and people, feeling scared without knowing exactly what I am afraid of.
This emotional instability fluctuates; at times I feel okay and can face things optimistically, while at other times I feel trapped in this recurring cycle of emotions.
Most importantly, it may be affecting my academic performance, making it hard for me to concentrate, even though I am trying very hard.

Hello: You mentioned that many things have happened before, leading to emotional instability, and perhaps those events are still affecting your mood.
It's important to talk about your feelings with family and trusted friends.
Accept that encountering bad situations can lead to feelings of depression, and remembering unpleasant memories can cause sadness.
Remind yourself that the past is behind you, and focus on nurturing your present and future.
Don't demand perfection from yourself; working hard is enough, and it's essential to take good care of yourself.
Emotions can indeed impact learning, so prioritize your emotional well-being.
Once your emotions improve, your learning efficiency may also enhance.
However, if things do not improve or worsen, it is advisable to seek medical assistance.
Wishing you all the best.

It sounds like you are going through an incredibly challenging time, and I want to acknowledge the courage it takes to share your feelings and experiences. Emotional turmoil, especially during the high school years, can be overwhelming and confusing. It's important to understand that you are not alone in feeling this way, and there are ways to navigate through these difficult emotions.

Firstly, the feelings of sadness, anxiety, and even thoughts of self-harm that you are experiencing are serious and deserve attention. These symptoms can be indicative of underlying mental health conditions such as depression or anxiety disorders. It's crucial to seek professional help from a mental health provider who can offer you the support and guidance you need. They can help you explore the root causes of your emotions and develop coping strategies tailored to your situation.

You mentioned experiencing moments of intense sadness and panic, such as difficulty breathing and shaking. These physical symptoms can be manifestations of anxiety, which often accompanies emotional distress. When we are overwhelmed, our bodies can react in ways that make us feel even more out of control. Learning grounding techniques, such as deep breathing exercises or mindfulness practices, can be beneficial in managing these symptoms. These techniques can help you regain a sense of control and calmness in moments of distress.

It's also important to address the impact these emotions have on your daily life, including your ability to concentrate on your studies. Emotional distress can significantly affect cognitive functions, making it harder to focus, retain information, and perform academically. Prioritizing your mental health is essential, and taking breaks when needed can help you recharge. Consider discussing your feelings with a trusted teacher or school counselor who can provide additional support and accommodations if necessary.

You mentioned feeling a sense of fear and uncertainty about facing others at school. Social anxiety is common among adolescents, especially when navigating friendships and peer relationships. It may help to remind yourself that many students share similar feelings of insecurity and anxiety. Building connections with supportive friends or peers can create a sense of belonging and reduce feelings of isolation. Engaging in activities that interest you, whether it's joining a club or participating in group projects, can also help you meet new people in a more comfortable setting.

Additionally, it's essential to express your feelings, whether through writing, art, or talking to someone you trust. Keeping a journal can be a therapeutic outlet, allowing you to process your emotions without judgment. If you find it difficult to talk to family members about your feelings, consider reaching out to a trusted friend or a mental health professional who can provide a safe space for you to express yourself.

Lastly, please remember that it's okay to ask for help. Seeking support is a sign of strength, not weakness. If you ever feel overwhelmed or have thoughts of self-harm, please reach out to a crisis hotline or a mental health professional immediately. Your life is valuable, and there are people who care about you and want to help you through this difficult time.

In summary, navigating emotional turmoil during high school can be incredibly challenging, but with the right support and strategies, it is possible to find a path toward healing and stability. Prioritize your mental health, seek professional help, and remember that you are not alone in this journey.
