The definition of regular exercise?
Hello, Dr.
Lee.
Health-related articles often discuss the importance of "regular exercise." Currently, I exercise three times a week, but sometimes in the morning and sometimes in the evening, and occasionally on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, or on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.
Does this count as regular exercise, or do I need to have a fixed schedule, such as every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday for at least half an hour each time, to be considered regular exercise? Thank you!
P, 40~49 year old female. Ask Date: 2017/05/18
Dr. Li Weiqiang reply Physical Fitness
Hello, the definition of regular exercise refers to the systematic movement of major joints.
Exercising three times a week, whether in the morning or evening, on varying days such as Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday, or Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday, can still be considered regular exercise.
A newer perspective focuses on the total volume of exercise rather than requiring a fixed schedule of every other day or specific days like Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday, or a minimum duration of thirty minutes each time.
Wishing you peace and health.
Sincerely, Dr.
Wei-Chiang Li, Attending Physician, Department of Rehabilitation, Taoyuan General Hospital, Ministry of Health and Welfare.

Understanding the definition of regular exercise is crucial for maintaining and improving overall health. Regular exercise is often emphasized in health-related articles and discussions, as it plays a significant role in preventing chronic diseases, enhancing mental health, and improving physical fitness.
To address your question, regular exercise does not necessarily have to follow a strict schedule of specific days and times. The key components of regular exercise include frequency, intensity, duration, and type of activity. The general recommendation for adults is to engage in at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity activity each week, spread out over several days. This can be broken down into sessions of at least 10 minutes at a time.
In your case, exercising three times a week is a good start, regardless of whether those sessions occur in the morning or evening, or on varying days of the week. The important factor is that you are consistently engaging in physical activity. The variability in your schedule does not negate the benefits of exercise. What matters most is that you are moving your body and getting your heart rate up during those sessions.
Moreover, the concept of "regularity" has evolved. Recent studies suggest that the total volume of exercise over a week is more important than the specific days or times you choose to work out. As long as you are accumulating enough physical activity to meet the recommended guidelines, you are effectively engaging in regular exercise.
Incorporating a variety of activities can also enhance your fitness levels and keep your routine enjoyable. This could include aerobic exercises like walking, running, cycling, or swimming, as well as strength training exercises that help build muscle and improve metabolism. Flexibility and balance exercises, such as yoga or tai chi, can also be beneficial, especially as we age.
It's also essential to listen to your body. If you feel fatigued or experience discomfort, it may be wise to adjust your routine. Adequate rest and recovery are just as important as the exercise itself to prevent injuries and promote overall health.
In summary, your current exercise routine of three times a week is a positive step towards maintaining your health. It does not have to be rigidly scheduled to be considered "regular." Focus on the total amount of activity you are doing, ensure you are incorporating a mix of different types of exercises, and most importantly, enjoy the process. Regular physical activity, regardless of the specific timing, contributes significantly to your health and well-being.
